Hello! I am planning on traveling to England next summer. My friend is hoping to go with me but I may end up traveling solo. I was wondering if this is safe for a woman in her mid-20's? I will be 26 when I intend on going on my trip. I am planning on staying mainly in the London area and possibly doing some day trips outside of the city. I was also looking into staying at a B&B instead of a large hotel or a hostel. Any tips, advice, warnings?
Thanks!! Cheryl |

London is a great city, but it has its share of crime. I would advise you to stay in Chelsea or Kensington. Both are nice areas with lots of small hotels and B&Bs. Use a money belt or neck pouch for important papers, and plan to be in safe areas at night. Take black cabs at night, avoiding the tube, trains, and minicabs after dark. The black cabs are expensive, but totally safe, and the drivers are the best trained in the world. They study for years, then have to pass an incredibly hard test to get their license. They can answer any question about London, and they know every street in the metro area. They're also unfailingly nice and kind. Cheaper minicabs are booked by phone, but don't take them if you're alone. There have been past problems with lone female passengers. I have had some "interesting" conversations with minicab drivers.
Make sure that you are discrete with your money. I go into the stall in the restroom to take cash out of my hidden stash. I carry a small purse with a few easily replaceable items. This allows me to be more relaxed, and blend in with locals. Dress casually, but don't wear white sneakers/sports shoes. You'll stand out if you do. Be friendly, but reserved, and use a quiet voice. Buy a book of British slang. It's useful. Some perfectly innocent terms, on both sides, are crude and rude to the other culture. I hope this helps. |
