It may not be the most frequently visited part of the UK, but it's one of the most beautiful. Afterall, it's the home of legendry singers, Tom Jones, Englebert Humperdink, and Charlotte Church, "the voice of an angel". Until January 2006, I hadn't been back to Wales in ten years. I was thrilled to be able to return. One thing I admire most, is that the young people today continue to speak Welsh, as well as English. The one thing that marks Wales out so ditinctly from Britain is the survival of Welsh as a living language. My fond memories include an amazing sunset over Caernarfon Bay, and Caernarfon Castle, where the Prince of Wales investiture ceremony is held; the Welsh countryside, so beautiful, and Snowdonia National Park, so inviting and so peaceful. It brought to mind the movie The Man Who Went Up a Hill and Came Down a Mountain, staring Hugh Grant, a movie about Mt. Snowdon. There are walks to Swallow and Conwy Falls as well as bridge and riverwalks, where the Rivers Llugwy and Conwy meet. I recommend staying at the Royal Oak Hotel in Betws-y-Coed or the Church Hill House B&B, both located in Snowdonia National Park. Betws has many gift shop and wonderful restaurants, there's nothing better than fresh-cooked lamb. Wales is known for the Welsh Love Spoon, one of the most unique symbols of romance, made from Sycamore, a symbol dating back further than the 17th century, Take the drive from Betws-y-Coed to Portmeirion where the view over looking Tremadog Bay is spectacular. Then visit the setting for the TV show The Prisioner; it's just beautiful. Of course if you are an afficionado of Portmeirion pottery, you'll be in heaven in this area. Walking the streets of Conwy and visiting the castle ruins, remarking how this modern city retains is medieval beauty and history.
I could go on and on, as there is so much more to Wales. It's history, beauty and it's people. |
