Assateague Island Va. is a great family beach. Being a national seashore there are no accomodations on the island, only a visitors' center,bath houses, and some lifeguarded areas.. You can stay on Chincoteague Island. Lots of moderately priced hotels and rentals and good restaurants. They have a lot of nature programs, ranger talks, beach campfire programs, etc.including some for children. It's a pretty laid back place except for the last week in July when they have the annual Pony Penning event where they round up the wild horses on Assateague and swim them over the channel to Chincoteague where they auction off some of the ponies.Neat place!
