I agree michigan has some fine beaches. One of my favorites is in Tawas. The Point is one of the best beaches I have ever been to. It is a state park, so it is pristine. Their is a lighthouse, bathouse, fishing ponds, playground equipment, and a boardwalk. The beach is very wide, and goes on for miles. It is a great family beach. The water is very shallow. I walk out so far into the water that the people on the shore are just specks on the beach. After im out there, I lay on a sandbar where the water is just a few inches high. Only the sounds of the waves, wind and gulls......Pure Bliss. Go in the last week of July or any time in august. The water is warmer then, and you wont find more then a dozen people on the beach.Pack a lunch and you will truly have one of the very best of days! This is michigan's best kept secret. I always shake my head in dismay, wondering why so few people know about this place. If your ever in Michigan , check it out. But please dont tell anyone about it mush

Unfortunately the water of Lake Michigan is not clean, you're better off on the UP on Lake Superior or east, over on Lake Huron.
Also, you have to travel about two hours up the coast to Ludington to catch the ferry, and than another two hours down the Wis coast to Milwaukee, plus the four hour ferry ride across the lake for about a $90.00 roundtrip ticket per person (with an additional $100.00+ to ferry your vehicle), and after all that time expense you're in Milwaukee, on a dirty lake!

SHhh. Let people think the lake is dirty! Where were you? Gary Indiana? Spent 6 days walking and swimming in that beautiful lake (checked bacteria levels). 5 ft waves three days in a row. Not too warm or cold, no salt, no jellyfish, few people, only two washed up fish... Michigan is also the least expensive waterfront rentals anywhere. The Illinois side is quite cold and has more seagull droppings causing higher bacteria esp in drought times.... Michigan rocks! There are 2 ferries Ludington/Manitawoc and Milwaukee/Muskegan
