A lot of people have asked in the past about specific clothing items that Sam wears and other questions about her style. Christina, Sam's personal stylist has agreed to come on the forums and talk about working with Sam and the clothes and fashions that are on the show. Post your questions this week and she will be here starting next Monday, the 21st, to answer them.

Hi Christina,
First off, I just want to say I really enjoy the clothing this season and think it goes well with the "edgier Sam". I also love the "Barbie Brown" site and was surprised to find that a lot of Sam's clothes come from stores I shop in.(I really didn't think I could afford anything in Sam's wardrobe) Anyway, I was wondering how you begin the process of finding clothes for Sam. Do you have a general idea in your head how you want to dress her when picking out clothes, or do you and Sam go out and decide together on the fly? Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions!!!

More of a comment than a question, but you are doing a great job with Sam's style. It suits her perfectly (no pun intended!). I could immediately tell a difference when I looked at the "See What Sam is Wearing" section before Great Weekends started. I love seeing the cute clothes as much as I love seeing the city attractions. If only we could have our own personal stylist! A girl can dream...

Great work Christina!

Hi Christina,
Thanks for visiting the forums. I have 2 questions? How did you get into being a professional stylist and how did you get connected with Samantha?

Sam is the queen of fashion. I love to see all of the great outfits on the site. What has been your favorite outfit of the season so far? Have you ever been a stylist for any other television shows or personalities?

Hello and thank you so much. I'm happy to hear that your enjoying Sam's wardrobe this season.
To answer your question, before we even began shooting the new series, I went on a big shopping spree and picked up a large variety of basic pants, jeans, t-shirt, blouses, tank tops, capri's, shorts, jackets, sweaters,shoes,etc.....all different styles, colors, cuts, lengths. Once we figured out what we really liked and what looked the most flattering and stylish, we knew which direction we wanted to take it.
I buy all of Samantha's wardrobe for the show and I'll usually bring, to every shoot, new pieces for her to try on and together we'll decide if we want to add them to wardrobe.
As far as deciding what Samantha is going to wear for each show and which scene, I will first read through the pitch of the show and take into account the location and what kind of activities Sam will be doing. For instance, if she is going to be walking alot and it's a hot day I would probably put together a cute comfortable pair of shorts, lightweight blouse with a pair of flats. If I know that she'll be walking around a park I might think about putting her in a brighter color so she will stand out amoungst the greenery. I'll put an outfit together but I'll always have 2 or 3 options so Samantha and I can choose which one might work best for that scene.
I hope I anwered your question. There's obviously alot more details that go into picking out the outfit but that's initially how we get started.

Hi mistyleann,

Thank you for noticing the difference in Sam's style. We really didnt want to change her look too much but we thought with the "Great Weekends" episodes we could have a bit more fun with the clothes. Beside's I think we all do a little shopping before a trip and try and get an outfit that fits in with the area that we're vacationing in, right?
Thank you for the really nice compliment.
And I wish I had my very own stylist too!

Take care,
Christina

Hi Robbie,

I've always kind of dabbled in wardrobe styling even though I'm more known for makeup and hair in the industry. I was a personal shopper at Nordstrom for a short time and I also worked at Ice Capades making costumes. But it wasnt until I moved to Boston where I really started working closely with some extremely talented stylist. They would do the wardrobe styling and I would do hair and makeup for a shoot and I would find myself wanting to learn more and more about wardrobe styling so I started to assist them whenever I could and before I knew it I was getting calls to just do wardrobe styling for different photoshoots and television.
I met Samantha a couple years ago on a commercial shoot for Buick. I had actually worked on a film in California 3 years prior, when someone from that film recommended me to Samantha's production company when they were inquiring about hiring a makeup artist for that shoot. And then a few months later I worked on her Passport to Latin America series,(Costa Rica and Panama episodes)and now I've been her personal stylist since last August.
And I must say that she is so amazing to work with. We have alot of fun together.

Thanks so much for your question and I hope your enjoying the new series.

Christina

Hi Poppadella,

To be honest with you, there were 3 outfits that were my ABSOLUTE favorite's but none of them made the show. Those scenes were cut. But the good news is that I will be able to use them again for another show. I loved some of her outfits in our "Great Weekends" Europe episodes coming up. It was a little chilly so there was alot of layering which I always like.
I've done both makeup and wardrobe for fashion shows, photoshoots, film and television and worked with the following personalities: Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Kathy Ireland,Jeff Bridges,Rob Lowe,Izabella Miko,Austin Nichols,Chef's Todd English and Ming Tsai, Patriots Teddy Bruschi and Troy Brown, Red Sox Jason Veritech, actor John Cleese, musician David Crosby, and most recently I had the pleasure of working with Kirk Douglas.

Thanks for your questions and I hope you keep enjoying the new series with the queen of fashion!!

Best Wishes,
Christina

Sam is not tall like a model. How tall is Sam? 5 foot 4 maybe? You choose outfits that is so flattering for her. She has a great fit figure, and her clothes do show that off. Tastefully of course! I like it that her clothes are kept fairly simple, but still high fashion. She's a beautiful woman, and simple is best to show off her natural beauty.
Keep up the great work!

Do you ever get clothes for free? I know Sam has a deal with Ecco for shoes. Does she have any other labels that give her clothes or sponsor her for the show?

Hello Littlepinetree,

Thank you for the compliment. And you are right about Sam's figure. Because she does have such a beautiful shape and is very fit it really does make my job easier. I do keep in mind that she is petite so we try and go with pieces that lengthen and are the most flattering.
I also try to be aware that she will be wearing some of these outfits for several different scenes and she'll be doing alot of different activitites so keeping the outfits simple, comfortable, yet stylish is very important. Especially when shooting a 12 hour day. But it is fun when we can go a little edgier if that scene allows.

Thanks again,
Christina

Hi Diane,

Yes, I do work with several different designers and we do trades. I have a couple jewelry designers, a brazilian bathing suit company, and I also have a great relationship with Couture Candy. I consistantly work on building those types of relationships so we can keep Samantha's wardrobe updatd with some of the newest looks in fashion.
If you take a look at the "What's Sam wearing" section, you'll see those designers listed.

Thanks for your questions.
Take care,
Christina

Please help Christina!! I love that you put "What Sam's wearing" on the website but you only have it done for Great Weekends. Could you possibly include the China episodes? In particular, I would like to know where Sam's shirt is from in the Sichuan episode when she goes to cooking school. It is yellow with ruffled 3/4 sleeves and a collar. I just love it and I am driving myself crazy trying to find something similar on the internet. I would really appreciate if you could provide me with the details of this shirt. Keep up the good work. Samantha looks great and is a great fashion role model for me.

Hi liser79,

I'll help you...
I did not go to China with Sam but I did purchase alot of the wardrobe pieces for her month long trip there. I believe that some of the wardrobe she wore was her own, including the yellow shirt you are speaking of. I'll find out from her and I'll let you know. And it might be difficult to put up her images from China with a wardrobe list since I was not there and I usually take those images of her while we are on location. In the meantime if you have any other questions about wardrobe just let me know and I'll find out for you.
Take care and as soon as I find out about the yellow shirt, I'll let you know.

Hi Liser79,

Spoke with Sam and she bought that yellow shirt while she was in China but no longer has it so unfortunately we dont have a label to go off of. If I ever come across a shirt like that I'll definitely let you know.

Sorry I didnt have more info for you but let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks,

Christina,
Thanks for doing this! Any way you could find out where Sam got these two necklaces: the leaf one from China episodes and the little black ball one from all her Hawaii, Great Hotels, some other episodes? I think she even wore it at her wedding!
You are the best! What does a typical day look like for you on the road? Do you do Sam's make-up too?

This is the same question I was going to ask! Also, what kind of hair does Sam have? It's always shaped so well. Is it very thick? I have very fine, flat hair, so I was wondering what kind of products she uses, if she uses any.

Thanks!

Hi Morgnst

Thanks for your patience on my delayed response. I dont actually cut or color Sam's hair. I do style it for the show though. So....I'm not sure if her haircut has a particular name that you could ask for. But I'm sure if you download a couple pictures of her hair from the front and the side, your hairstylist will be able to give you a very similiar cut. I've uploaded a few images of Sam on the "What's Sam Wearing" section of her website that show her side profile. Hope that helps.

Christina

Hi bluebelles,

No problem. I bought the leaf necklace almost a year ago from So Good Jewelry. And I think the little black ball necklace is actually Sam's own necklace and I believe it's a black pearl. I'll ask her next time and let you know if she remembers where she bought it.
Oh...where do I start about a typical day for me on the road. How much time do you have? Well, once I've hauled my 4 suitcases into a car, gone through all the jumps and hurdles at the airport, hauled my 4 suit cases again after the plane trip, arrived and settled into my hotel room, I usually start the process of unpacking all the wardrobe, shoes accessories, organizing them, steaming them, rearranging my hotel room so I can set up an area for hair and makeup. Then I might have a glass of wine. Now that's just pregame stuff. On the actual shoot day I'm usually up about 2 1/2 hours before our "call time" because, I'm a girl, and I need a good hour to try and look presentable, then I use the next 1 hr-1hr 15 to get Samantha camera ready. Hair, makeup, wardrobe. Then I need about 15 minutes to gather all wardrobe that she might be changing into for another scene or two later and I'll need to bring all the items to "touch up" her hair and makeup for the entire rest of the day. I also bring my wardrobe kit with lots of goodies in it in case a button falls off, I need to safety pin anything, I need to doubleside tape anything, or if Sam get's a little stain from oh..let's say.... a piece of chocolate , then I can just pull out my little handy tide wipes. We dont always go back to the hotel so I need to have everything with me.
Now I'm set for about a 10-12 hr day of shooting. But my day doesnt end when they call "It's a wrap"!!!
That's a story for another day.

Thanks for your questions bluebelles.

Hi joandirk,

Sam has really great hair and her hairstylist does an amazing job on the cut. Her hair has a more fine texture and we've used products by Cutler to give it more volume.
I'm not sure if they have a website because I get them from their salon in NY. But if you just google Cutler you should be able to get some more information on their products.

Thanks for your questions.
Have a great day,
Christina

Christinab,

I want to come on this thread and thank you for joining our little community here. You have done a really nice job this season and Samantha looks just great in every show. I'm happy that she has found such a good friend in you, to make all her time on the road more enjoyable.

Not being very style-conscious, I can only think of a couple of questions:

1.) Did Samantha recently pierce her ears? I have noticed that we are seeing many more earrings than in the past.

2.) Is the light grey ski hat seen on the beach walk in Portsmouth one and the same as my favorite from the top of the Jungfrau? If so, what happened to the big pom pom?

These are tough questions, I realize, but the toughest of all concerns the red coat she wears in the Passport series opener on the escalator.
People need to know where it came from. I realize this was obtained well before your time as official stylist, but it would be great if you could solve the mystery before jr wilson's 25th anniversary. Any man who goes to such lengths to find the perfect gift should be rewarded, don't you think?

Hopefully yours,
Mother O.

Hi Mother O.

You are so welcome. And thank you for the compliment. I've enjoyed answering questions and hearing what everyone says about Sam's wardrobe. We're having alot of fun with fashion, especially in certain locations.
To answer your questions, Sam has always had her ears pierced and the light grey knitted hat is new. A few of the scarves and that hat were made locally in the New England area.
And I am desperately trying to get an answer on "THE RED COAT". That was shot before my time so I need to do a little research and question asking but I'll do my very best to solve that mystery. I think alot of people want to know where they could get one. I know I do.

Thanks and take care,
Christina

I spoke with Sam and the red coat/dress is DKNY. I'm not sure if that exact style and color are still available this season but I would try looking at Nordstrom.
They carry DKNY and if they dont have it in stock they certainly will be able to locate something similiar for you.
If I find out anymore info I will let you all know.

Thanks and talk to you soon,

Hi Christina,
I was wondering if you could tell me where Sam's khaki trench from the Paris episode is from? I was looking at one from Banana Republic and it looked similar but I love the look of the one Sam is wearing.

I'm sure the Paris and Italy images in "What's Sam Wearing" will be up soon. I got that trench coat at Zara. Zara basics.
If you have any other questions about those episodes please let me know.

Hi Christina,
In the Paris episode, Sam is wearing a dark gray coat during her walk around the Marais neighborhood with her expat friend. It's not listed in the "What's Sam Wearing" altho in photo#2 she's holding it. Also her brown boots are listed as her own (she's got very nice taste). Can you tell me where these 2 items are from? Thanks so much and I would like to say you're doing a great job.

Hi Christina!

I can't tell you how much I enjoy watching the show and all of Samantha's great outfits. You and Samantha have really done a wonderful job finding clothes that are beautiful on her and also bring out the best of all the places you are visiting. The one- shoulder magenta dress that Samantha is wearing in her Saturday at 10:00 PM promo commercial is absolutely stunning. Is there anyway you can let me know who the designer is and/or where I may be able to find the dress?

Thanks and safe travels!

Hi deenad,

You are so sweet! Thank you for your comments and I'm so happy that you enjoy the show and Sam's outfits.
The dress that Sam is wearing for the promo is by Alexia Admor, New York. I picked it up in South Beach at Macy's. It's been so much fun picking out wardrobe for Sam that fits with either the theme or the location of the episodes. I hope you keep watching and enjoying the show.
Wait til you see Season Two! There are some crazy locations and many more outfits!

Take care,
Christina

Ok......the coat is from Zara's. Now I picked that one up in Paris over a year ago so I'm not sure if they would still have it but it seems like it might be one of their basic pieces. And the boots are Sigerson Morrison. Not sure wear Sam got them but they have a website www.sigersonmorrison.com(looks like it's under construction at the moment) but it list their store locations. NY, LA, Palm Beach FL.
And thanks for catching the nameless coat. I'll keep an eye on those when they are put up on the "What's Sam Wearing" section.

Thank you for your question and compliment. Smile

Hi Christina!

I noticed in one of your answers you said you worked in Boston for a few years. I am currently living in Boston and looking for anything to do with fashion. I know that industry isn't that strong here, so I was wondering if you could pass along any tips! Thanks so much, I really appreciate any help!

Best,
Lauren
