Hey everyone, I'm just checking in because I haven't posted in a while (though come to think of it the forum's been pretty quiet anyway). I'm all moved in to Loyola and I start classes Monday! It should be fun. And good news -- we have cable in our room so hopefully I won't miss out on too much Sam!

Kelsey - Good to hear from you. Most of the old gang don't post much anymore. I wish you good luck at college this year. I'm sure you'll do just fine. Keep posting here, as we all love your comments. Take care. Que te vaya bien.

PS - Having cable in your room is nice, but I never would have passed.

Free cable! Sounds like going to Loyola is almost as good as living in Monaco. Are you at the Lake Shore Campus? My grandmother lived in an apartment building on Loyola Ave. for about 30 years, and I lived there with her when I was very young. Loyola Ave. wasn’t actually part of the Lake Shore Campus then, but I remember walking through the campus many times.

As a fellow Rambler to another let me wish you the best of luck with your studies. I'm sure you'll do my Alma Mater proud. I was on the Lake Shore campus last year for the first time in a long while and was quite impressed with the changes that have been made. I envy you kids attending today. Work hard but at the same time remember to have fun!

Yep the campus is pretty nice. They're working on one of the fields now.

By the way, what exactly is a Rambler? From what I gather, it's a wolf that just keeps talking and talking and talking and never really stops and isn't talking about anything they just talk talk talk...

ok I'm sure it's not that. but still... ?

Well, a Rambler can be someone who travels a lot. It's also a species of rose,or it's a one story ranch house, and it used to be a model of car, the Nash Rambler. You'll just have to ask somebody at the school. As far as wolves are concerned, there'll be a few of those on campus. Take care.

Congratulations, Kelsey,
And have a great freshman year at Loyola (I'm sure the Jesuits will take care of you). Just remember that each year gets easier and more fun, and that many of your best friends for the rest of your life you'll be meeting for the first time soon, maybe even tomorrow.

Don't fix your eyes on just one area right away because you may discover a field of interest you never realized you had. Freshman year likely won't give you much choice, but by your sophomore year don't be afraid of trying a course out of sheer curiosity. It may lead you to a completely unsuspected career (like hosting travel shows - who'd have guessed that?). I once took a modern British theater course which kind of sat dormant afterwards for years, but much later I discovered a true enjoyment of the theater that had been percolating inside.

College isn't just getting you a career - I realize that's how they sell it to the parents who pay the bills. It's really learning about the cultured world that surrounds us. So art and literature and history are things we all should know to be enlightened members of the world and informed citizens even if you want to major in finance. You already know this I'm sure, but come course selection time it's a nice reminder. But also make sure you have fun.

A bit of a ramble here myself, speaking of Ramblers, but I have 4 nieces/nephews all starting first year of college or med school right now, so it's sort of near the top of my head these days. I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Thanks, Capt.tuttle. Actually I was able to pretty much choose all of my classes. Intro to int'l studies, Latin (yay!), Hinduism, Spanish literature, and evolution&genetics. I'm about to head out to my first class, so I've got to go but I'll let you know how it went!

Kelsey,
That's certainly an interesting first semester of classes. I gather you must have placed out of such rousing winners as Freshman Comp and Western Civ. Nicely done. No doubt we'll be hearing less of you, as it should be, now that the real world is beckoning you over there, and all this (excepting perhaps Samantha and wherever she may be this evening) is increasingly surreal. But then some of us should have retired years ago, although I think I'm finally fading like the Cheshire Cat. Have a great first semester.

Sadly, I have comp next semester. But my AP European History scores must have gotten me out of western civ. Plus I was able to skip lots of Spanish.

Please, you know you can't stay away from this place. And I only post when i have stuff to say, and I haven't even seen China yet so... when I do I guess I'll be here.

thanks again. Smile

As Ramon de Campoamor once wrote:

En este mundo traidor,
nada es verdad ni mentira,
todo es segun el color de cristal
con que se mira.

Es la punta de vista. Have a great year and keep us posted.

Funny thing, when I was writing to you the other day, it dawned on me that I really didn't know why we were "Ramblers". I simply accepted the fact that it sounded a lot better than being called a "Blue Demon".

Cruiseluver and dejardins,

Back home now in my last remaining days of vacation, I must step in and take immediate and decisive action to clear this mystery up for you guys.
According to the Loyola Website, Traditions section, here's the answer.

Why Ramblers?

Loyola University Chicago is the only NCAA Division I program with the nickname "Ramblers" for its teams. The unusual moniker originated when football was a common and popular sport at Loyola.

Before the 1920s, all college athletics teams were merely assigned their school colors, instead of a nickname. All Loyola teams were known as the "Maroon and Gold."

In 1925, the football coach, along with the student newspaper, conducted a contest to name the football team. The winning entry was "Grandees," tying into the Spanish origins of St. Ignatius of Loyola. However, the name "Grandees" failed to catch on.

In 1926, a more informal, but much more binding process, finally yielded the nickname: "Ramblers." That year, because the football team traveled so extensively across the United States, "rambling from state to state," the media dubbed Loyola as "the Ramblers."

Despite dropping football as a varsity sport in 1930, the nickname "Ramblers" is still proudly carried by today's athletics teams at Loyola University Chicago.

So there you have it, folks. Ramble onward.

I actually spent much of my childhood and adolescence racking up many miles in a 1960 AMC Rambler Ambassador station wagon. I still have the art deco hood ornament. What a great car. Rambler Ambassador would be a good name for Samantha, actually, who is always in our thoughts here.

Father O and I join the others in wishing you the best possible freshman year, Kelsey. Keep writing.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Mystery solved. Because everyone I've talked to has NO IDEA why that was our name. Cool! Haha too bad we don't have football. Actually not too bad since I don't really like watching it.

I second those thanks, Mother O. Now I'll be able to explain to people what it means if I'm ever asked again.

Loyola Ramblers - 1963 NCAA National Basketball Champions! (OK, so its been awhile).

You are quite welcome, Ramblers.
Now you have a dining hall conversation starter, Kelsey.
I'm sure davidschneidman knew that bit of trivia too.
I just beat him to it this time.

Ramblers is (are) certainly better than Spanish Inquisitors, Kelsey, which I suppose it could have been with Ignatius Loyola and all (except of course no one would have expected that). Still a few college mascots that are only colors today, mostly Ivy League Crimsons, Big Reds and Big Greens, and way out west the Stanford Cardinal these days. But there's only one Orange - naturally Wink

Motherorange, thanks for your high regard of my knowledge of trivia, but I must confess I didn’t know what a Rambler is. As usual, you have demonstrated that you are the master cyber sleuth. Guess what? My Dad had a 1962 Rambler Classic; it was gold with a white roof and a pushbutton automatic transmission.

I guess you're right, Nunesy! Well, happy to do it. The forum has been dead quiet. And I noticed that the last time there was an official, scheduled chat with Sam was over 2 years ago. Which probably contributes to the quietness.

Have there been any new GW episodes? I haven't seen any in a long time. And I've still yet to see China. *sigh*

davidschneidman,
You are much too modest. I will always be in awe of many of the informational tidbits you have uncovered during our time here. The directions for folding a towel monkey, as well as getting an audience with the Pope, are noteworthy examples. But will anyone determine the origin of Samantha's red coat? I'm stumped.
Push button transmission? Wow. My Rambler's outstanding feature was reclining seats. Quite handy on camping trips when it was rainy and the tent leaked. The hood ornament was actually a sleek, unclothed lady. I'm quite sure that was the real reason my Dad bought the car.

There was a cute song in 1958 by the Playmates called "Beep Beep !" about a little Nash Rambler. A guy in a Cadilac couldn't beat the Rambler in a race. The last line said," How do you get this car out of second gear?" But I never had one myself.

I actually know that song... There was a version of it on this one children's music cassette my babysitter used to play.

For some reason I have a hard time picturing you having a babysitter. Oh well, Happy Labor Day ! Hit those books, you Rambler you. Take care.

Hard to believe for me to Smile. But we were all young once! I still am...

I hit the books. Ouch. Hinduism is a very hard class because basically everything is like "Well, this might have happened. But it might not have. But that's what people think. Except for some."
