Which city in the world has the most Baroque churches? Actually, it’s good old London. When the city was decimated in the 1666 Great Fire, most of the churches were rebuilt in the then-fashionable Baroque. Now, a large number of the churches survive, lovingly maintained by volunteers, which means that to visit them, you have to go between Monday and Friday. But they are all close together, and many are well-hidden, waiting for you to discover them. They are called the Wren Churches, because the great architect Sir Christopher Wren designed many of them. This was around the same time that he was building St. Paul’s Cathedral, and you can see plenty of places where he was experimenting for his masterpiece. My personal favorites are St. Stephen Walbrook, St. Martin Ludgate, St Mary-le-Bow, and St Brides Fleet Street.
