Hey Jeff,

I live in Big Lake Alaska. You have a great show, however last night's show (8-7-2007) you visited some bison in Turnagain Arm by Portage Glacier. The only Bison in Turnagain Arm are at the Wildlife Conservation place, which is basically a tourist stop.

There are wild herds of Bison in other regions of Alaska, but there are none in Turnagain Arm.

I have to agree with you. Too many errors on that episode. Thanks for your input. Alaska sure is beautiful! I can't wait to visit again!

For those who are interested in what is happening in Alaska from hiking, hunting, fishing etc. check out this forum on Alaska. It is one of the best I have found.

another error, i hope jeff will educate himself on.... he referred to the native dress as costumes. he should know this is insulting. white folks often are ignorant of traditional dress or regalia of indigenous people.

I wanted to poin out another error on the Alaska show about the humpback whales and the Orca. The orca, that were on the show, were probrably the local, resident, orca that eat fish, not humpbacks. The transient orcas will occasionally attack a solitary humpback or gray calf and mom. Also, the orca are matrilinial and the females head the pod not the males as Jeff stated. They weren't following him he was following the females. His mom was probrably in the lead.It is important to recognize and acknowledge that most sea peoples reside together in peace. There was no threat of a "bloodbath" as he said. Even transient orca won't attack a pod of humpback or grey whales. Humpback's can administer a killing blow to orca with their tales.
I have studied and swum with whales and dolphin worldwide for over 22 years. I do like Jeff's show but it is important not to portray Orca as killers as most resident pods in Alaska and the Puget sound, Canandian waters are peaceful fish eaters, very gentle with humans as shown by Keiko, Luna and Springer. So, Jeff tell the story of how these cetaceans exist is peace and harmony , too, please. Thanks. And I do like the show!

Errors, Errors, Errors!!!! I have been reading lots of comments about all the errors in the show, some seemingly on purpose for the sake of dramatization. Alaska is such a great state, with so much to offer, unmatched by so many places, that I don’t see why it is necessary to dramatize, mislead, and/or even lie about what they are showing us. Alaska speaks for herself, and she doesn’t need someone to sensationalize what can be found there. Doing this confuses and detracts from what IS. I just watched a scene with a Bald Eagle flying across the mountains, and to dramatize the scene, they dubbed in the sound of a screeching hawk (probably a red tail; the call of a bald eagle is not that awe-inspiring). So, anyone who wants to hear the call of a Bald Eagle should probably not watch this show. The real question is, if they are purposefully making errors such as this, what else can we believe about what we see, or what they are telling us???? They should let ALASKA do the talking!!!!! They don’t need Jeff!!!!

Just saw the segment on the bison along Turnagain Arm & I'm glad someone else pointed out they are actually at the Wildlife Conservation Center (http://www.alaskawildlife.org/). I thought I was missing something huge & have explored the Portage Glacier area thoroughly...how did I miss a herd of bison!? While the Conservation Center is a great place, I do find it quite misleading to make it seem as if he has this lucky sighting when anyone with $7.50 can do the same.

Thank you akbassking and pa2ak - you've confirmed a suspicion that was bugging me. During 10.5 months in AK, drove the Seward Highway many times along Turnagain Arm, and was at wits end trying to figure out where, other than the Wildlife Conservation Center, there could possibly be a herd of bison hanging out, as there is just not much real estate that is flat or pasture-like. One thing I'd like to say in defense of the show and Jeff, however, is that unlike so many travel shows that feel like a pastiche of commercials for cruise lines and resorts, at least this show presents a lot of non-commercial activities and off-the-beaten trail locations. I don't mind Jeff's John Denver like enthusiasm for the land (I'm guilty of the same crime), but Alaaka is so amazing on its own that there is no need to create false impressions (such as the bison) - there's no need to hype a place as fascinating as Alaska. In spite of the show's flaws, I hope it has a long run on the Travel Channel - those of us no longer able to experience The Last Frontier in person need our fix.

While I understand the entertainment value of programs such as these, it is worthwhile to get the facts straight. I was watching the episode where Corwin was "stalking" the mighty wolf in the southeast..... I'm sorry, but one very rarely stumbles across a foraging wolf in the wild....let alone without the rest of it's, uh, friends, nearby. You will, however, stumble across that very same wolf when you travel about 26 miles from downtown Haines, where the local filmmaker keeps this wolf and other Alaskan animals for projects such as these. I hope this local filmmaker was credited for the use of his wolf..

I have a funny story related to the wood bison. I went to Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and met the executive director, Mike Miller, and he showed me the wood bison. I asked him where they were in the wild. He pointed, sarcastically, towards the pen. Kind of disheartening for me considering that I went from Denver to visit Alaska, and was hoping to see them in the wild.

Oh well, it was still fun seeing the beluga whales along the turnagain arm.

What a Joke!! I didn't relize that it was a comedy. The editing was so bad!!! The some of the shots from the air weren't even of Sitka. The episode on Southeast and the "secluded lodge" how funny yes it is on an island but so is the local airport. Five miles from town my ass you can see it from the road we only have 18 miles of road from one end to the other and if you look closely you can see all the houses in the background when he was talking in the boat. I guess it makes for better t.v. to fly into the lodge than ride in the little whaler with the plywood shelter--Oh the best was our local mayor playing the nice lodge guest joining Jeff for some local oysters. To funny so much more...but only us local will know...People will ride the crusie shipping and think it is wonderful place, oh well
