Though I reside in Texas now, there are some eating places (in California's Central Coast) that I miss when I was taking classes at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

I'd like to recommend Pismo Beach, CA. and their clams. Their 61st Annual Clam Festival will be on October 20/21. Pismo Beach was once called the 'Clam Captial of the World'. (Pismo Beach) was also mentioned in a Bug's Bunny cartoon 'Ali Baba Bunny'.

San Luis Obispo, CA. is also well-known for their Farmer's Market every Thursday night. I was first introduced to tri-tip here.

Nipomo, CA. has a restaurant called Jocko's where I swear on their Santa Maria style bar b que. I finished some contract work in the Fresno area and made the pilgrimage back to partake on their filet mignon extra cut, once again. Well worth the drive.

Buelton, CA. has alway been a stop off the 101 from my drives from San Luis Obispo to Los Angeles. If time permitted, it was there that I would take my fill of Anderson's famous splt pea soup.

in san diego there is a place called lucha libre, http://www.tacosmackdown.com/

they make some of my favorite mexican food in san diego and they have a really entertaining luchadore theme, complete with a very fancy 'champions booth' that you have to make a reservation to sit in.

they also have something called a TJ hotdog, its a hotdog wrapped in bacon and then covered in fajita vegetables, they have a eat as many as you can in 20 minutes contest and i think the current record is 15,,, i would be pretty impressed if anyone ever beat it

Hey my name is brandon, I live in San Pedro, California. There is a spot you gotta check out. Its called the 7-10 Grille

http://www.710grille.com/

This place has been on the news for their Hot Wings. I personally cant get passed the "scorching" and that is about 1/2 way until you reach the top and there needs to be a waiver filled out before you have the hottest kind which is the "Ring Of Fire". This is a definite challenge for you!

At the base of Mt Whitney in Lone Pine, CA. at the start of the Mount Whitney Trail there is a wonderful little store set up in the mountains called the Mount Whitney Portal Store. They provide hikers and climbers any final outfitting needs before their climb to the highest point in the lower 48 states.

The store has a wonderful family owned atmosphere. You feel at home just hanging out in the store. Everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful and it’s been family operated since 1987.

The portal store is famous for their wonderful breakfasts. Their pancakes are the specialty. They are around 15 inches wide and 2 inches thick. They’re so large they will not fit on just 1 plate, you’ll need 2. They had to have a machine shop custom make a spatula in order to flip the pancakes. There use to be a challenge where if you could eat 3 of them you would get them free (I'm not sure if this still takes place or not). Once you start devouring the huge pancake you'll then notice that they have a delicious hint of cinnamon and vanilla flavor. This is undoubtedly the best way to start or end your climb and your day.

Go and enjoy the beautiful sights of the Inyo Forest and the incredible taste of the gigantic pancakes.

Below is a link to the picture of my climbing buddy and me about to start on our delicious meal.

It's on us if you can finish this huge bowl of pho within 60 minutes!

Plus we hang an 8x10in personal photo of you on our wall of Pho Garden Champions. The meal cost $22 if unfinished within the alloted time. No substitutions of any food products may be made. Challengers must eat all noodles and combination beef with tripe to successfully beat the Pho Garden Challenge. Please view our Rules & Waiver of Liability Form for more details.

PHO GARDEN

I second the vote for Pho Garden in San Francisco. One ginormous bowl filled with 3lbs of meat and 3 lbs of noodle, topped off with super yummy broth that's simmered for like a week! One hour to eat it!! Easy yo!
