If Adam is going to try any of the fat sandwiches, he has to go to the Rutgers grease trucks - all of the other places are just imitations. Also, just to clarify, the Fat Darryl is not the original fat sandwich - I went to the same high school as Darryl, and he created the sandwich when I was a freshman at Rutgers ('96/'97).
Pete & Elda's has good pizza, but even I could finish the XXL pizza by myself with no problem - this would not be a challenge for Adam at all.
One interesting place he should try is Mariner's Cove in Brielle. It's a breakfast place which is known for having 200+ different omelet combinations - my favorite is the Belly Buster topped with Pork Roll - pure NJ right there.

Pete and Elda's, Carmen's Pizzeria. Neptune New Jersey. It has been voted Jersey Shore's best pizza for many years. Here, there is a record of 3 XXL pies eaten, in a row. Come enjoy the thin crust pizza! We'd love to have you in New Jersey!

Adam must go to Jersey Joe's in Port Monmouth NJ. Joe's makes the best Italian hot dogs in NJ, the real deal. He can also try a variation of the famaous NJ egg, cheese & pork roll sandwich called "the Bomber" which adds a hash brown patty to te mix.
Also in the area is Stewart's in Hazlet on RT 36. The owner, Frank, went to Rutgers and has a full menu of the Rutgers type "fat sandwiches"
Enjoy!
