Charcoal Pit

The Charcoal Pit has been a staple on the Delaware restaurant scene since the 50s. While it's known for it's burgers, unique menu items are Ice Cream Sundaes that represent area high schools. The daddy of them all though, is the Kitchen Sink, 20 scoops of Ice Cream with all the classic toppings. While not necessarily a food challenge it is a sight to see and tastes pretty good too.

The Dog House

Another icon on the Delaware restaurant scene is the Dog House, which also made its debut in the early 50's. The menu is straight forward and simple, dogs, burgers and Philly steaks. The foot long dogs are grilled to order and what they're really known for. Ask any local if they've been to the Dog House and they will respond with a yes. They also have a pizza and sandwich shop in the back. Overall it's a really cool place with some tasty food.

They don't have a website but can be found at

Capriotti's Sandwich Shop

Capriotti's founded in the 70's, took Delaware by storm. Their unique and plentiful Sandwiches are to die for. My favorite is The Bobbie, homemade oven roasted turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing and mayo on a sub roll. Mmm...makes me hungry just typing about it. While Capriotti's has it's roots in Delaware franchises are popping up all around the country at a rapid pace. Definitely worth checking out.

Grotto Pizza

When you think about legendary pizza pies Chicago and New York come to mind. Grotto Pizza gives Delaware it’s own claim to fame for pizza. Serving up delicious pies since the 60’s Grotto Pizza is well known and loved throughout the State. It’s hard to tell what makes this pizza so unique from the rest but one this for sure, it’s absolutely delicious.

If Adam comes to the Philly area, he has to try the cheese steaks. And the Claymont Steak Shop would be perfect for him. Those sandwiches are huge. And tasty, too. I don't think I've found a better cheese steak yet.
