As previously suggested by owlerj2510 I recommend Crabill's. My parent's own the restaurant and I have grown up eating these miniature hamburgers. I really enjoy your show and thought the delicious sandwiches and history would be perfect. I have put pictures on the what's your trip page and posted two stories I located on the internet. One is from a book on hamburger's which did a two page story on the shop. The other is from a customer who felt like spreading the tastiness and history of our restaurant. Lastly, here is a link to the a site which ranks our burgers as one of the top ten in America(http://www.americasbestonline.com/hamburgers.html).
Being the owner's son I personally challenge Adam to eat 50 doubles. Crabill's is very, very small. What’s amazing is that the original Crabill's was much smaller. Eight stools sit bolted to the floor at a small counter and there is barely enough room to pass behind them. "The old place was five times smaller," grill cook Andy Hiltibran told me. The first time I visited Crabill's I sat next to a white-bearded regular named Will Yoder who, for decades, plays the annual town Santa. Will had recently had his teeth removed and was on a soft food diet. Personally, I couldn’t think of a better spot to dine on tasty, soft food. The tiny burgers at Crabill’s, with their pillowy Wonder buns and healthy dose of burger grease, actually do melt in your mouth. The burgers at Crabill’s are cooked in a wide, shallow griddle. The griddle is filled with about a half-inch of grease. "The griddle in the old place was much smaller," Andy told me, and showed me with his hands only a foot apart. "It was also much deeper.” Small balls of fresh ground beef are tossed into the grease then pressed once with specially made spatulas. The grill person uses two of these spatulas at a time to systematically press and flip the dozens of patties floating in the grease with a sort of Bennihanna-like speed and dexterity. As your burger nears doneness, it gets a splash of grease from a spatula and is transferred to a tiny waiting Wonder bun. Chopped raw onion, spicy mustard, and relish are standard, but cheese and ketchup are also available. There is a sign on the wall menu that explains that ketchup was introduced in 1990. That’s right, it took ketchup sixty-three years to be accepted at Crabill’s. Crabill’s is owned by Marsha, granddaughter of Forrest Crabill, the original owner, and her husband. A milkman before entering the burger business, Forrest Crabill started selling hamburgers in 1927 (made small the way his mother made them) out of a buggy for a nickel. In 1929, he moved into a more stable location. Besides the prices, the menu has not changed much since (hamburgers now cost 60 cents). One key difference on the menu is that Forest only offered mustard, relish, and onions as condiments. In 1990, they added ketchup. Marsha notes that she can tell the difference between new customers and those who have been coming for years, because the “oldtimers” never order their burgers with ketchup. Forrest died very young of a heart attack, so his wife Frida had to take over the business (with 7 children at home). Frida retired at the age of 65, and Marsha’s cousin took over. They rented the building, and in 1988, the owner of the building wanted to sell it. Marsha’s cousin did not want to buy the building, so the business closed. Marsha and her husband started Crabill’s up again out of a buggy in 1989. They had gone to school for fashion merchandising and were working in a factory before then, so they had no restaurant experience. Within an hour of opening up, they sold out. They now rent their current location at 727 Miami Street. Marsha remembers working for her grandmother at Crabill’s from when she was in kindergarten. The whole family is still actively involved in running the restaurant, for now her 3 kids work their in the summer. The old shop had only 6 wooden stools, and the new shop is three times bigger than the old one, even though it seats only 8 stools (the six original plus two extra) at the counter. Forrest wanted to keep it small because the smaller the building, the lower the overhead. Because Crabill’s has been in Urbana for so long, customers often come in with their kids saying that they used to eat there when they were younger, leaving the high school campus (which was nearby) for lunch and getting into trouble for coming back too late. They get a lot of regular customers from Urbana, but they do not get many college students, and Marsha really wants to tap into the market at Urbana University. At the moment, Marsha does not want to franchise, because she likes knowing the customers when they come in, if not their names, what they want to order. For example, she’ll see people in the parking lot and say ““Here comes 3 doubles…” Marsha feels that it is this atmosphere that draws people in, so that they do not need to advertise. All their advertisement is done by word of mouth and the T-shirts they sell. See the menu below. In addition, Crabill’s also sells pies. Marsha’s mom used to make them, then her, then her sister. Now the pies are made in Springfield. Hamburgers 60 cents Cheeseburgers 65 cents Doubles Hamburgers 90 cents Cheeseburgers 95 cents Hot dog $1.25 Cheese Dog $1.35 Chili Dog 2.45 Chili Cheese Dog 2.50 Soup 8 oz $1.25 12 oz $2.25 |

Ok Adam...no more playin around. Get to Cincinnati my friend. How can you not want to visit a town that was once named Porkopolis! Come on! A great town with really unique grub.
How about.. Montgomery Inn: A family owned businee since the 50s has sold more pork ribs than any other place in the U.S. Every U.S. President since Ford has enjoyed Montgomery Inn and nearly every rock star, athlete and movie star you can think of orders Montgomery Inn Ribs for private parties...this is the ultimate pork Rib...Memphis aint got nothin on Cincinnati. Skyline Chili: Come on...this is odd stuff but incredible. Greek style Chili made with beef, cinnamon and a ton of other ingredients. Served over spaghetti and toped with onions, and a mountain of cheddar cheese. Awesome…ervy Cincinnati Kid has grown up on this stuff since the 40’s...amazzzazzzing. Graeters Ice Cream: Heck…just ask Oprah if you don’t believe me. This is the best ice cream on planet Earth. No Joke! Graeter's Ice Cream uses a french pot method and makes very small small batches, by hand, daily. Chocolate chips in the ice cream the size of a small automobile. The flavor is incredible and the following in Cincinnati is deep and loyal. The best! Come on Adam. These are just a few...I could add more. Come on over to this cool river town and enjoy the food that George Clooney, Carmen Electra, Jerry Springer and this great Cincinnati Kid grew up on. Give me a shout...I'll provide you a tour of the best places Cincinati can offer. |

Big Fan Adam, been enjoying the show for some time now.
Toledo Ohio eating hot spots Hometown favorite: Tony Paco's Famous Hot Dogs and Pickles 2 locations downtown (original on Front Street, newest across from 5/3rd Field downtown) Include's Tony's "Mother of All Dogs" a foot long Tony Paco's Polish Hot Dog, Tony Paco's dogs are closer compared to sausage though. Unique Pizza's: Vito's Pizza (all over town, includes a Tony Paco's Pizza, but he Mediterranean pizza is award winning and quite amazing) Local Pizza: Gino's, and JoJo's Local Wings: Jed's Barbecue and Brew; numerous locations throughout town, original location was moved but on Reynold's Road in Maumee (still close enough), includes numerous unique varieties of wings including mild, medium, hot, spicy, and the super hot "superfly", including baked "Mary Jane" and fried "Taco" flavored wings, garlic and numerous others, they also have Jed's Flaming Balls. The wings from Jed's Barbecue and Brew you will never ever ever forget. The varieties of foods available in and around Toledo are astonishing, there is the obvious italian, and authentic mexican, but then there's true pacific quisine, that means asian foods to those who don't know, vietnamese, japanese, all kinds, at restaurants like Restaurant Pacific, and Sakura's Japanese Steak House. There is also indian, middle eastern, and greek foods throughout the area, Toledo has become a world eatery epicenter over the years There is barely a kind of food that I can't find to eat in this city. I don't know much about whether there are many eating challenges in Toledo, Ohio, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the spots I pointed out above had a few. Youngstown Ohio places: Pizza: Wedgewood Pizza Ice Cream: Handel's Ice Cream (this has become a chain and also has locations throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania, according to National Geographic's "top 10 of everything" it is the best ice cream in the world, it originated in Youngstown, Ohio). Back on Toledo, a bit of a story from when I was a bit younger and not as keen to hot foods, my parents brought home Jed's "Hot" fireballs one day, placed them in the refridgerator, I woke up in the middle of the night, still in high school I think and saw the styrofoam container, only marked as "jeds" not as "Hot" i decided, chicken's a good snack and it can be eaten cold. That cold chicken with "hot" flavoring had me sweating within 5 minutes. Obviously at the time I had a bit lower tolerance for hot or spicy foods, but to this day I still refuse to even try Jed's Superfly wings, but if Adam were there it might prompt me to... My family are eatery fanatics, always trying out new restaurants, and numerous different places, my own high school graduation party had middle eastern foods, greek foods (grape leaves) and tony paco's fried pickles! as well as tony paco's hot dogs, my own graduation party had a smorgasbord of local food stuffs rooted from all over the world and it was amazing, that was 4 years ago. I would love to provide input on more eateries around Toledo, Ohio. |

Nobody has mentioned Willie's Sports Cafe in Cincinnati. It's the western hills location only.
Since June Willie's has had 2 challenges. The burger challenge is (3) 1 lb burgers, a lb of bacon, a lb of cheese and (2) grilled cheese sandwiches. If the burger and fries are eaten in 55 minutes, the challenger gets the burger free, the official "challenge" t-shirt and their picture on the wall. The wing challenge is 12 of the hottest wings ever. These wings make Quaker Steak's look like "mild" by comparison. Eat 12 wings in 10 minutes with a 4 minute waiting period and the wings are free. Survivors get the "challenge" t-shirt and their picture of the wall of flame. |

Two Cleveland area restaurants I can think of as well are Southeast Harley Davidson in Bedford Heights, Ohio. It has wonderful all beef burgers, my favorite being an "Ultra" it is angus beef, sauteed mushrooms and onions, bacon, cheese, and it is prepared amazingly.
Southeast Harley has been a Harley Davidson dealership in the Cleveland area for more than 70 years plus it includes a bit of a Harley museum as well as the original diner area. The next plays is Shay's Restaurant in downtown Cleveland on St. Clair Street, not the greatest of neighborhoods, but by far one of the classic Cleveland staples, last time I went I got myself a "Krazy Omelette" which includes 4 eggs and ground beef, bacon, ham, cheese, and veggies, it is served on a platter and comes with a half platter side of hash browns. There are other restaurants around the Cleveland area, head down to 6th street to find home town favorite bars. |

try the 4lb or 6lb burger challenge at the Quaker City Cafe. its a little ma & pa joint in the po-dunk town of quaker city ohio. the burgers aren't weighed before cooking, like mickeydees. they add an extra half pound or so of meat so that they are 4 or 6 pounds after cooked. i think so far there's only 1 guy to have finished the 4 pounder. most people go for the 'easy' 2 pound challenge. but i know adam's better than that....

Mike's Place, Kent Ohio: http://www.mikesplacerestaurant.com/
THE STUANATOR The Stuanator is a double-decker cheeseburger sub, with six 1/2 pound burger patties, two kinds of cheese, french fries and curly fries, along with the usual fixin's. Only 11 people have attempted to finish this behemoth in the allotted 30 minutes. To the victor go the spoils of a free t-shirt, a free sandwich, and immortality...until you keel over from the coronary. Only 2 have succeeded. Fun college stop, restaurant filled with sites. You must follow The Rule's of Mike's Place too... |

Jackson Hole Restaurant, Massillon, Ohio.
This is a family business where the portion are big and the food is great. Thye have a challenge that has been tried by 25 people and only 3 have finished in the alloted time of 45 minutes. It is a TWELVE EEG CHEESE OMELET WITH YOUR CHOICE OF 2 INGREDIENTS, HOMEFRIES AND 2 101/2 PANCAKES. This is a challenge worth taking, even with Adam's big appitite I don't think he could do it. they serve evrything big as standard food. Such as a half pound hamburger with a pound of fresh cut frnch fries or a 1/2 pound chili cheese dog. This would definitely arestaurant Adam should visit and while he is there he could visit the pro football hall of fame. |

This is a family business that has a BIG CHALLENGE it is a TWELVE EGG CHEESE OMELET WITH YOUR CHOICE OF TWO ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS, HOMEFRIES AND 2 TEN AND ONE HALH INCH PANCAKES. The food is great, the portions are big and the staff is freindly, for example their hamburger is a fresh hand formed 8 onuce burger with a pound of fresh cut frech fries, another favorite is the half pound chili cheese dog and fries. This is a restaurant that Adam should seriously consider visiting. While in Massillon Adam and the crew could visit the Pro Football Hall of Fame that is only 10 minutes away. I hope Adam will visit this restaurant it will make a good segment on the show. |

Adam, when you come back to Columbus, be sure to check out http://www.johnnyoakspoboy.com/ - Johnny Oak's Po Boy and Shrimp shack. Though the web site doesn't mention it, Johnny has a monster shrimp sandwich which, if you can eat it in 20 minutes (I think it is) you get for free... but if you don't make it, it costs $50 (there's 50 shrimp, as well as other goodies on the sandwich).

Kiser's BBQ Shack - Athens, Ohio Family owned/operated
This is the best BBQ I have ever had, hands down!!!!! My first taste of the sauce and I told my husband we were moving to Athens (we currently live in Cincinnati)! The sweet sauce has such a complex flavor that you want to keep eating more and more to savor each ingredient! The pork is tender, lean, and the highest quality meat that I have ever had at a locally run BBQ joint, it melts in your mouth. The french fries are fresh cut and if the look of the fries alone didn't tell you this, the one of a kind fresh cut fry taste was a complete give away. This restaurant is located just off East State Street in The Market (what passes for the local mall). Kiser's portions are huge and what would an AWESOME BBQ joint be without an eating challenge. At Kiser's diners try and be the next to go up on "Boss Hog Wall of Fame". To obtain this honor a diner must eat: 2 half pound angus burgers, 3 pieces of bacon, 4 oz. of cheese, 1/2 pound chopped pork, lettuce, tomato, onions, and pickles, 4 oz. sauce and 1 pound of french fries in under 30 minutes. As of 9/18/09 the record was 15 minutes. Come on Adam and give them a try!!!!!!!!! |
