It's been quite awhile since I've gotten out of here. I'm looking for tips on good small towns to visit that are preferably in the Midwest, East, or Southern part of the United States and not too expensive. My dream trip right now would be a road trip that involved little, hole in the wall taverns, some sightseeing, interesting locals, and the beautiful outdoors. We like out of the way places and don't need anyting too fancy. I love meeting new people and would prefer to stay away from typical tourist traps. I'm thinking the Smoky Mountains or maybe Alabama? Mississippi? Somewhere that we can hike and spend times outdoors would be great. Any advice would be appreciated! P.S. I live in Wisconsin.
Alabama is a great place to visit. My favorite location is the Alabama Gulf Coast. There are hiking paths and bike trails, kayaking, fishing, and of course the beaches are beautiful. This web site has some good information about the area: www.thebeachiscalling.org. Hope you find what you're looking for!
Check out www.HistoricOld27.com It will help you find events and festivals to enjoy in all the states nroth to south along Old US-27. Traveling Old US-27 is great for finding small old towns to enjoy the real old america of the midwest.
A great trip would be the Natchez Trace. It starts in Nashville Tn. and ends in Natchez Ms. In Natchez you could stay and see antebellum homes, take a horse carriage tour, see old taverns - (king's tavern - oldest wooden structure in Ms territory,Bowie's tavern, Biscuits and Blues, the castle pub, and the under the hill saloon) Then take Hwy 61 south to St, Francesville La. to see the myrtles which is a haunted antebellum home that you could stay in. If you keep going on 61 it will bring you to Baton Rouge where you can take Interstate 10 to New Orleans. This would be a great trip that you would probally enjoy.
