Years ago I was asked to go along to a semi-famous soul food restaurant here in L.A. I won't say which one or exactly where it was....but let's just say we only went there during the day and got out fast!
I honestly can't tell you what I ate - my memory of the place was not the 11 other people who were happy with their food, it was the 1 person who was not. As we all oooooo'd and aaaaaaaah'd at what was set before us, we were all a bit perplexed by the one dish that did NOT appear the least bit appetizing. The man the dish was in front of (after several moments of stunned silence) summed it up best: "They apparently served me a carbueretor with some sauce on it."
The waiter assured us the aforementioned 3 1/2 inch high sauced item was indeed from an actual animal (quite possibly even a pig) but my friend was reasonably assured after eating it that we should all check our engines to make sure nothing was missing, just in case!

That's funny! I think soul-food pretty much starts out wrong! It's tasty, but I've learned no to even wonder whats in it

Soul food is awesome! I mean it is not really healthy for you...but it kind of reminds me of how the French learned how to cook. I mean nobody really wants to eat tripe and organs when they can have the rib-eye or the filet...those early blacks took whatever was given to them and learned how to make them taste good. Some greens, some hock, breaded and fried...it's all good. Gizzards...I love gizzards..mmm...

Now, I don't know if this is an enormous coinkie-dinkie, buuuuut it is the weensiest bit possible he found out about it from myself and Mightymac discussing it on this here forum, right'ta'here!! Tony - if you are indeed going to show Roscoe's on February 5 then you have made me a very happy lady .

Haha, that would be so funny if he didn't know about it. I feel it's one of those Mecca type locations where anybody who knows anything about food knows about. If he did go, I hope he went to the Crenshaw one!
Nothing wrong with Chicken, Waffles, Grits, Gravy, and some collards. Incidentally, I think I heard that Chicken and Waffles were introduced by the Belgium?
Wonder if he tried Ezells here in Seattle?
