About 4 years ago I had an opportunity to visist Cozumel, Mexico. Yeah I know it can be very touristy but you can still get lost in the REAL neighborhoods. I had been told that eating in a dive was a bad idea so I was all for it! I had wondered the streets until there were no more tourists and all I saw was locals. It was at that moment I began to look around for some local flavor and I was soon rewarded. It didn't appear to be much of an eatery. Tables outside, nothing fancy, well off the streets, nothing fancy. The menu was in spanish but I knew enough to know what chicken was so I ordered a tamale. What I got was a giant steaming banana leaf filled with all kinds of goodness and heartburn. The tamale was filled with pulled chicken, habaneros and jalapenos and a few things I had never seen. It was a shock to my system because I had only had tex-mex in my life. It tasted wonderful. This dish in a total dive off the beaten path was a true taste of Mexico. It was rich, tasty,HOT, and filled with many years of tradition. If you ever go to Cozumel stay away from the popular areas. Go get yourself lost and take a risk at a hidden treasure.
