When my wife and I lived in Taiwan, I became addicted to an Indian spicy milk tea I used to pick up at 7/11. I had never been to India so I didn't know if it was actually Indian but I sure liked the way it tasted.
After moving back to San Diego, one day I was in an Indian supermarket getting some chana dal (Indian chickpeas) when I saw they had a huge coffee/tea aisle so I asked the owner of the supermarket about that tea I used to drink in Taiwan and she immediately knew what I wanted. She handed me three ingredients, told me how to prepare it, and sure enough it was just want I wanted. If anyone wants to try a really good and very different tea, here's how you do it:
Ingredients:
Green (not black) Cardamom Seeds (whole seeds that come in a small plastic bag)
Upper Assam Mamri Tea (I like the Flower Brand)
Marsala Spices containing black pepper, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg. (pre-ground in it's own plastic bag)
Milk
Honey
Fill your mug (about 16 oz)with water and pour it into a pot. Split four green cardamom seeds with the flat end of a knife and add, then bring to a boil.
Once the water is boiling, add one tablespoon of Upper Assam Mamri black tea and 1/4 teaspoon of Marsala spices.
Add milk and remove from the stove, then strain into your mug. Finally add a tablespoon of honey to sweeten.
You can change the spice mixture a bit to suite your taste but this formula should be pretty close to what you'll like. It's inexpensive, delicious, quick and easy to prepare and has far less caffeine than coffee.
To think, I actually picked up something useful from a 7/11!
