When my Husband and I first visited Alaska before living here we went on a fishing trip on the Quinahauk River. We were to be set up to fish and camp for silver salmon for three days. Our guide never came back for us and we endured a wind storm with winds from about 80-100mph. The next day after heroic efforts to save our meagre tent my husband came down with heart problems. I began to break down camp and worked on figuring out away to get back to civilization. Occassionally, Natives would zip by in fishing boats. I planned to flag one down and get my husband back to where medical facilities were available. After a disappointing day of attemping to flag down boats, my husband came up beside my and said let me show you how to do this. He pulled 20 dollad bill out of his pocket and held it up as the next boat came by. You would have thought that boat had a break on it. An elderly native man pulled his boat over and asked us what we needed. Once we told him, he jumped off his boat and threw all our camping gear amoungest his catch of salmon that had spawned. On our way back to the mouth of the river which had and airport. The gentleman insisted we stop for a few moments and see his fish camp. He wife and family greeted us warmly and showed us how to process salmon and smoke them. It was the best smoked salmon in the world. We did make it back to Anchorage and a hospital and later my husband got better with an angioplasty. We now live in Anchorage, Alaska and have many new adventures with more to come.
