We were staying on the bay in Zihuatenejo a few years back. Being a travel agent in search of the most unique backroad experiences I could find (and yeah, hotel inspections along the way), we hired Anselno - Taxi #36 to be our driver for the day. It was a Sunday and we asked him to take us where he would go. We drove a half-hour inland to a shack where we were the only patrons, aside from the chickens depositing their contributions in exchange for scraps (Mondays are Pollo day!) We were late and it was the bottom of the pot...the very last bowl of the only item on the menu: Iguana. It was served in a red chili soup with all the guerrero side dishes. This soup was incredible, deep in color with a creamy texture though not a drop of dairy within. Floating about, were small pieces of Iguana...the attached skin lending an especially authentic character to the dish. IT WAS WARM...not hot, but WARM. It warmed you from inside-out. Iguana Soup is not a neat dish...you get into it with your fingers. We washed up in the facilities outback the shack: a cistern and more chickens (thirsty ones).
When we returned home, hy husband saw someone selling their pet iguana in the newspaper and gave me that raised eye-brow look, "hungry, babe?"

I can tell you that it does not taste like chicken. I have been going by the local shelter just checking to see what kind of lizards need rescuing. ( Smile ). Try it next time you are down that way, or have a friend that needs to get rid of an over sized Iguana. Nice!

I was about 45 min north of Zihuatenejo (Troncones) and the keeper of the house we were staying offered to make us Iquana Mole. I was game but then the owner of them home said no due this women had killed off almost all the iquanas in the area and he enjoyed having them around. Almost had Iqauana. Maybe next time.
