Morgan Hill Poppy Jasper by slabgrabber (created on )Gallery | Comments
Thursday, May 14th was the last day for digging at the Morgan Hill poppy jasper location. The property has cleared escrow and the new owners show no interest in the jasper or in allowing access. This is not advantageous to rockhounds, but I always cheer when property owners exercise their rights, as we are rapidly losing them. Reportedly, the adit will be filled in and abandoned.
The mostly red (and some yellow) jasper is plentiful at the site, but orbs and poppies have been seen less in recent years. It doesn't help that the iron-rich, red soil makes everything look like red jasper anyway. Despite that, I had no difficulty locating poppies, bands, swirls, quartzy pieces and pieces blackened by hematite. There were even samples of plum-colored and yellow-green jaspers to be found. I could have collected ten times what I brought home but high graded my diggings and only paid for what was carried out.
I felt honored to be among the last to see this local treasure in situ. This is one adventure to tell the grandkids.
-Rocky.
