Maui is a really cool island but the beaches aren't that great and it's super crowded. Also, a sad history, the C and H sugar company basically owns the whole island, stolen by "missionaries" like so much other native land. They use govt subsidies and millions of gallons of water to grow sugar cane on the entire center of the island. You'll see the nasty smoke spewing factory as you land.

I must reply to your statement that Maui's beaches aren't that great. Maui has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. You can find some crowded ones but there are so many off the beaten path that allow you solitude and privacy. If you limit yourself to places like Lahaina and Kaanapali, you will not find the true essence of Maui.

Try the beach at Wailea, Maui and if you want a wonderful place to stay I would recommend the Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa

I have to say I was completely suprised by your statement that the beaches in Maui are crowded. My boyfriend and I were just there this past January and one of the things we liked best about Maui was the beautiful uncrowded beaches. There were several times that we were on a beach with less than 10 people. One time there were only 4 of us on a particular beach. Maui has the most beautiful beaches that I've ever seen.

I agree with the responses already posted. Maui have it all when it comes to beaches. The popular ones in Lahaina/Kaanapali near most of the major hotels, Wailea has small groups, Kihei gives you some great body boarding, La Perouse with excellent snorkling (low tide is best), Hookipa for surfing, and the best of all is you can pull off the road (safely) and enjoy any beach. Spent many hours on a secluded beach along the Road to Hana, all by ourselves! Watch the time of year you go an do your homework to see when the cane clearing is going on, dry season (less waterfalls), Kona winds....

I just got back from a two week trip to Maui. I have been going there since the 1980's. It is and was totally awesome. I stayed in Wailea for the first time and it was incredible. There are dozens of great beaches and all could be considered among the best in the world. I don't know how the above reader could have such a bad experience unless they had an agenda (!)...We are already planning our next trip. Aloha and Mahalo.

Maui is not your typical beach coastline for sure, but the beaches that it dooes have are out of this world. Kapalua Bay is my fave!!! The bay offers some really great snorkeling and a sheltered bay for safety. A great view of Molokai also awaits you. Other great beaches are Poolenalena in Makena, Kaanapali and DT Fleming Beach in West Maui are also magnificent.

Maui has some of the most secluded beaches like Kauai and some of the most crowded beaches almost like Waikiki.

I have to agree with the first statement. After going to Oahu in June, we went to Maui in October and I was disappointed. We had a guidebook for all the beaches and when we saw them in person, they weren't nearly as pretty as the pictures or as the beaches in Oahu. The best thing about Maui is the road ro Hana, which is an absolute to-do while visiting the Island. But Oahu has much prettier beaches and a true Hawaiian feel - Maui didn't for me.

There was several beaches my wife and I visited and we were the only people on the beach. I could not tell you the names of them we just decided to drive and stop. The beaches are unbelievable.

Maui is what you make of it. It rains, too, but it didn't take away the beauty or the plans we had.

The beaches at Napali Shores (Kapalua) is gorgeous and has a protected cove, unlike Fleming.
