I am traveling to Hawaii this July for a volleyball tournament, King Kamehameha's to be exact. Unfortunately, I tore my ACL and now I am unable to participate in this once in a lifetime opportunity. But I looked it over, and thought everything would be ok; I would then cheer on my team to the championships.
Although, now I have a bit of a predicament, I cannot partake in as many activities as I was going to before the incident. I desperately need help.
Right now, us athletes are scheduled to stay at the Hilton Hawaiian Village at Waikiki. My family wants to island hop to another island, but we cannot seem to make up our minds. My injury will only allow me to basically do on land activities unless I go in a boat or something.
If I could get advise from people who have lived there, live there, or have gone there on vacation or on business, that would be great and relieving...
Sorry about your injury but everybody needs a cheering section to. The boat tours are alot of fun Kauai you can do a Napali Coast cruise beautiful coastline has been used in several movies plus Hawaii spinner dolphins and sea turtles. The Bi had a boat tour I believe that went around where the lava flow is going into the ocean as the hike would be too rough for your knee. You may also try helicoptor tours although they are usually a lttle pricey. Interisland airfare is pretty low right now so if you have time you might be able to do a couple. On Maui for instance the road to Hana is very popular for the scenery with many curves in the road and several waterfalls.
I went to the Big Island and loved it. We spent most of our time in the Hawaii Volcanos National Park which can mean a lot of walking so I'm not sure if you can do that with your injury but even just stopping by the visitors center and driving around the park is a must do there. It's great. We spent four days exploring the park and didn't really even scratch the surface. There are also black sand beaches there. We went to Punalu'u and saw the green sea turtles basking on the shore. Awesome!
Sure I can offer some assistance. I live in Ohio and recently planned a trip to several Hawaiian Islands by using an online guide that blows away everything else that I have found online. The website is http://www.resource4hawaii.com and it will help you more than anything I could write to you about. Enjoy their music while you investigate each island. You will be so impressed with this site that you will most likely share it with your family and friends as I have done. Enjoy, Mike K.
Sorry to hear about your injury. Take it from someone who was born and raised in Hawaii, for those of us who love Volleyball it is a way of life in this state. Honestly, most of the activities that tourists would do in the islands are water activities or require a lot of walking. However, there are always bus tours around the different islands, helicopter tours, and lots of shows to see. When you do get to Hawaii definitely pick up a copy of the different island magazines that are located in magazine stands all over Waikiki. Even if you haven't planned anything in advance they will give you a good idea of what each island offers, if there is a cost it will let you know what it is, and there are discount coupons in the back. If you have the chance I would definitely recommend the Polynesian Cultural Center(PCC). It does require a lot of walking however they do offer wheelchairs, electric carts, etc... But it is well worth it especially if you can spend the whole day there. The night show there is better than any luau you will ever go there, and you will have the chance to experience all of the different polynesian cultures.
