After tonight's premiere of Uruguay, at 10 ET, come back here and discuss the show.

And check out Tony's Uruguay Travel Guide, Photos and Video.

Enjoy!

I have a technical question... I love the visual effects produced using the black and white photographs. Any idea what this is called or how it was done? There were instances when the camera seemed to shoot aerially over the photographs, some depth was added to the photographs, figures were foreshortened, etc.

Any help appreciated!

Hi Tony, great show and thanks for putting Uruguay on the map.
I’m originally from Uruguay, came to the U.S in 76 and grew up in NJ, now reside in South Texas.
Like you guys my ancestors where also from France, too bad your brother had no luck at the Uruguayan national archives (unfortunatly they are not in the best of shape).
My son is a great fan of your show and very proud of his Uruguayan heritage.
I’m an amateur historian and my “thing” is Uruguayan history, if I can be of some help to you or your brother in doing some more research about the Bourdein family in Uruguay, feel free to contact me.
Thanks again for the show and for “just being you”
Regards
Alex

First off I want to say I like Tony. And we all know about his love affair with meat. But he is such a butt hole about what it takes to get the meat he loves some much. Someone had to kill the cow or pig Tony loves to eat. But (I don't think he knows this)he looks down on people who kill their dinner. He is okay with eating his body weight with meat. And making fun of veggie heads. While he stuffs his face full of any animal he can find. But as soon as he sees the live animal he will be eating. He cries like a little girl. Man up Tony or stop eating meat.

I spent the weekend in New York attending a wedding, and couldn't wait for the moment to come back home in Northern Virginia and watched the TiVO'd show.
It was very good, Mr. Bourdain, and I'm sorry you couldn't find the family you were looking for. You know what the problem is? The family is up north, in the city of Salto, 500km north of Montevideo.

The family indeed moved to Uruguay, but not Montevideo (although you can find a few Burdins over there). The rest of the family, the Bourdin, moved to Salto. My great-grand-father, Emilio Bourdin was first generation in Uruguay. The family indeed is big in Salto.

I moved to the United States in 1990 to live in Virginia and work in Washington, D.C.

I had a great time watching the show, I had a great time seeing once again El Mercado del Puerto, el Candombe, and everything else you showed around.

Next time you decide to go and look for the family, give me holler... I'll make sure you find what you and your brother are looking for.

All the best!
Mauricio Bourdin

Let me second lmrodriguez's technical question in hopes that we'll get a reply. I'd love to know how they did what they did with the historic photos. So much more interesting than the Ken Burns effect.

I think it might be based on http://www.metacafe.com/watch/791435/transform_2d_to_3d...t_movie_of_the_year/, which has been out for awhile as a demo but not generally available, AFAIK.

Great episode. Made me want to visit Uruguay soon.

What a fun episode! I'm sorry Tony and Chris hit a dead end with their genealogical research (I've been doing my own for 30+years, too), but it was still a good brother-bonding episode.

I know it's probably the Uraguyan equivalent of a chicken running around in the back yard, dinner-wise, but . . . the armadillo. I really wished the armadillo got a pass.

The show was great. You did a great job in showing what us Uruguayans knew all along; that Uruguay is a beautiful country filled with beautiful people and great food.

By the way, armadillo is not a common food in Uruguay. Why eat armadillo when there is so much beef around? Wink

By the way, could it be possible if you guys could share the antique pictures featured on the show? The static jpeg versions please.

Great episode. Loved it from start to finish. Wonderful contrast between Tony and his brother (who sound just alike - same cadence, inflections - ah genetics...) Loved the thread of the "search" throughout. Very nice - lots of layers.

Particularly enjoyed the ruminations on the virtue of "patience" from Frances Mallman.

Again, really impressed with the graphics as a few people have noted. The steak didn't quite measure up to the camel from last week, but the stereo-opticon stuff was magical!

A thousand thanks Tony for the amazing episode run in my home land. The 3-D b/w graphics were excellent
The way you displayed the simple life, good food, and tradition was outstanding
I hope you and brother f***ing enjoyed it. I’m sure you did

So...regarding the pile of meat on the photo journal...shouldn't the term be "carnivoracious"?

This episode makes me wish for smellivision.

Marvelous episode. "I do this for a mother***** living." Classic. Only why didn't you tell us just a little bit more about your brother? You barely scratched the surface. Was that his decision?

It seems to me as if this season this show is more about hunting and killing than the lovely scenery, culture, native people, and food of areas visited. While I understand Anthony is a huge carnivore( and accept that though I consider myself an omnivore) I would appreciate more of his insights and less killing. I find myself changing the station to avoid the requisite hunting scenes each week recently.
