This was fun! Even though I have no desire to travel to Hawaii, I really liked this episode. Pukadogs looked pretty good. Don't care for Spam but no big deal. Tony picked the best shirt out of the bunch.
Too bad that guy lost his house. Surfing looks fun but hard. Todd, you're funny. |

Thought the Pied de Cochon tee shirt he was already wearing when he walked into the shop was the best of the bunch, but maybe that's just me. Sucks you can't get them online anymore.

Another look and I must say I have to agree with you. All of his t-shirts are cool. So unlike the rest.
It's too bad you can't order them anymore...Now I want one! |

Normally, I am a big fan of this show, because I love to travel, and I love Tony's often political dialogue about the places he is visiting. I didn't get that in the Hawai`i show. It was portrayed as a happy polynesian place, without any critical look at what has happened to Native Hawaiians or the fact that some still consider Hawai`i an occupied place. I live in Hawaii. It is a beautiful place. But it is not always this happy go lucky melting pot. There is a huge homeless population. There are tensions between ethnic groups. The epidemic of crystal meth has wreaked havoc on too many to count... I could go on and on. The fact is, I was disappointed to not hear Tony be critical about any of this. Yes, Hawai`i is part of America, but that does not mean we should not take a look at the realities that exist there and say that it is okay for tourists or anyone to remain ignorant.

Except he's not usually political. He's philosophical, which is very different. Hawaii has problems, but so does every other place he's been. Tony did a very fun, upbeat show on Cleveland. The crime rate in Cleveland is very, very high. There are human rights violations galore in some of the other countries he's visited, but pointing that out is not the purpose of the show. As a travel show, the idea is to highlight what's good about a place. He never purposely goes in to find what is wrong with a place unless it makes itself unavoidable.
Getting back to the original comment, I too really enjoyed the Hawaii episode. I thought it had everything that a good episode of No Rez needs. |
