I find the majority of this thread to be comical. The show was about Bourdain's experiences in Romania, not a Samantha Brown piece about nice hotels and tourist sites (not that there is anything wrong with that!).
If it makes the 'WE ARE OWED AN APOLOGY' set happy, let me say that I watched the show, I'm an American and it in no way removed my desire to, or changed the probability that I will, visit Romania in the future. Another interesting show by Mr. Bourdain. Not his best but much better than tripe being pushed by the 'major' networks on a daily basis. |

Oh, 1 comment to the 'I can't even find an email address to which to complain!' remarks - see that little 'About Us' tab at the bottom of the page? Try it... It took me all of 15 seconds to figure that out, lol.

Gary has a very valid point on the fact that "No Reservations" is Tony's take on his travels, not a peppy, always-smiling, semi-vapid Samantha Brown happy-happy piece.
Were there production decision mistakes during the Romanian show? Probably. Was using Zamir as a guide a mistake? Most liekly. However, a great part of "No Reservations" and the reason why Tony is such a great show host is that they show the "not-so-great" things that happen on each trip. Tony's not there to do a sparkly ad for the local toursim office. Part of the appeal of the show is showing the kitsch and the underbelly of a country. It's part of this in every episode of "No Reservations." I'd rather have Tony's sarcasm and truthful take than Samantha Brown's over-the-top, pun-filled, forced wonderment style. Did they have some bad experiences and make some bad decisions on the tour of Romania. Sure. Yet, hasn't anyone who's traveled to another country done the same? I know I've had some disappointing and unenjoyable occasions during trips to Europe and Asia (don't get me started on Ireland's train and bus services!!). They weren't highlights of the trips, but they were still part of the experience. Also, consider this - maybe Romania isn't the greatest place to visit. Maybe Anthony's biggest sin to all the detractors here is that he showed the reality of being a tourist in Romania. Keep up the great work, Tony! |

Well, I have a huuuge surprise to find that in Russia every common russian affords flying a mig and in Romania we can only have a "primitive cuisine" and corruption(+ jaristea kitschy like restaurants)!!
As the show stands(Anthony and the producers claim) for unbeaten tracks of an average inhabitant of whichever country he travels to. Oh, yes, I know, I'm a "romaniac". In the end everything IS about money the producers can get form a TV show. Or bribery they can get to "tell a story". It's not about the story but the way one can tell it..... |

Wow. Tony had a bad time in Romania and it's got everyones knickers in a twist. Just goes to show how so many people want their lives to be a fantasy. One of the main reasons I like the show is that Tony doesn't sugar coat things. That's what makes it real, watchable and funny. You complainers need to get your heads out of the sand and grow up. Blemishes are part of what makes the world so wonderful.Keep it up Tony.

Well, Coco, I am addressing this post to you because, just like you, I emigrated from the same part of the world about 25 years ago. And, last night (October 26, 2009), after having watched a re-run of the same episode on Romania, I felt exactly the way you did when you directed your 03/06/08 post to the producers of the show on Romania. My question to all involved: if Mr. Bourdain had such a miserable time in Romania, and his experience there took him to places that do not depict the way the Romanians treat their guests, why re-broadcast the episode? Leave Romania out of the loop if the intent of the show is to insult its people (isn't that what the movie "Borat" did, too?), or to make its viewers switch to a different channel. I have great respect for the TRAVEL channel, I watch it almost religiously, but this recent episode on Romania was very disappointing. |

I watched the Romania show and found it interesting because my son was just there last week on a "journalist junket". Your show on Beruit was interesting as well because I had just returned from visiting him in Beruit, just before the war broke out. I found it a beautiful place and was glad I got to see it before the war. My son has spent many months there writing about it in his blog. He is currently writing a book on Lebanon.
You didn't seem to be enjoying yourself all the much n Transylvania, but I still found it interesting (probably could have skipped the halloween party?) Keep on traveling and tasting. I love your show! You can catch my sons blog at michaeltotten.com |
