well, you can come to the west coast & even Vancouver--as Viet cuisine is truly taking hold here now.. & I've tried it.. but I do know-- no matter how good-- it'll never compare to all the damn hot great treats-- bourdain greedily devours in vietnam..

In my area, pho restaurants are all over the place due to many Vietnamese immigrants in the area. So you need to find the nearest Vietnamese neighbourhood.

I'm not in NewYork but Chicago obviously, and here we have a 3 block street on the northside called Argyle that is loaded with Vietnamese spots. All the Pho is similar but different as well. I did not get Vietnamese food at first or understand how much French Influence has on it but it is wild stuff man.

From the list of restaurants on the website that alix-zed provided above, I go to (New) Tu Do at 102 Bowery for my pho fix. My sister loves their bbq pork chop & rice dish (#65 on their menu). You can check out their menu at http://www.menupages.com/restaurants/new-tu-do/ |

great you found it helpful-- gosh I wish we had those here--as I'm far from the Vietnamese community where i am..
did you check that site recently?? there's some yummy recipes-- also check saveur mag site-- more viet treats. as for that famous viet coffee.. here's a way having it at home. I've tried ao thought to experiment. here's my mock version: make very strong coffee-- dripped. have a can of condensed milk ready..fill up mug with milk about a half inch thick??( or to taste)-- top half way with coffee. if wanted cold.. same way..in tall glass add ice.. stir.. yum... |

Thanks for the website info. That's a great website by Andrea Nguyen. I was looking through her recipes and everything looks so good.

welcome.. i was so thrilled when i found it. did you read her recent entry--May issue of Saveur will feature Vietnam & her homecoming.. also find some of her recipes available at saveur.
I find though- Viet food is not really for take-away, one must be careful as they use rice wrapper mostly which is best eaten fresh, as soon as it's made or else it gets sticky. so be careful what works in take-aways. I tried some of their rice cake desserts esp ones with coconut-- not bad, not too sweet. |

Ha...once you eat Vietnamese food, you'll never go back to greasy Chinese food.
Perhaps the problem is that the Chinese food in this country has become to westernized over the years. Just like when I was in Thailand: I'm amazed that what I ate in that country for nearly a month, did NOT match hardly anything that I ate in the states (except the tea and pad thai.) Oh...and you can easily buy the drip coffee pot and EAGLE BRAND coffee (forgot the brand for the cream) to make it at home. VIETNAMESE COFFEE and SUMMER ROLLS (NON-fried fresh rolls) rock! Story is that the Vietnamese took French coffee and manipulated it to fit their hot humid climate. I don't know if that's accurate but it sure is great coffee -- and I canNOT drink US coffee at all. However, it is highly caloric because of all the sweet cream that's used!!! |
