I just wanted to post that I love the episodes he does on SE Asia. I lived over there for a bit in Thailand, and love the way the country pissed me off. I was in Lampang, on the other side of a mountain from Chiangmai, where all the tourists go, and could relate stories about falling in love with my corner tofu vendor and his granddaughter, the raw red ant eggs, the dog with one leg, the cobra who lived under my house, constantly being tricked into eating things that were meat, and I was told that it wasn't meat, so now I'm a meataholic, or when I was in Ayatthaya and given home made alcohol, aged in a 7 Up bottle with a honeycomb in it on top of the fridge and then served one night in a cut up soda bottle as you are handed a musical instrument to play as a bunch of Japanese tourists ride an elephant wagon to tour a wat-lined street, and you can't tell which way is up because you've had way too much of the nasty stuff. I couldn't wait to get away from the place, but it's left such a hole in my heart I can't wait to get back. Written by a married white mother of four. And yes I know I just wrote a run-on sentence.

I thinking of possibly teaching English (since I don't speak Thai) in Chiangmai. If possible, email me and let's talk off-line.
I can't wait to see his show on Thailand. I never got sick eating the food -- although the Thai college student traveling with me got hospitalized for a couple days ("But he ate the same things that I did, Doctor?" The response: "Your immunity is just better than his?" At my age, I thought?) And yes, I ate street food -- and I mean where they wash the dishes in plastic pans on the curb! Never got ill the entire 20 days, but my stomach never completely settled either (when I hit the airport restaurants in Japan enroute back to the states, I ate like a refugee!) Although Thailand was not as clean as Korea or Japan, they're weren't as edgy either. Let's talk: hkhodges13@aol.com |
