The Omnibus Land Management Bill passed the House yesterday. It already passed the Senate. In part, it shuts down all vehicle access to BLM and some other federal lands. This was put in because of one senator's (Diane Feinstein) war against the automobile. Roads to many of Kirsten's and our favorite spots will be closed, not maintained, and if you go there you will be fined, jailed, and your vehicle will be taken. And no; you can't really walk thirty miles or so from the main road to get to the rocks.
Every administration before this one has held that the wealth, beauty, and resources of the USA belong to the citizenry and we hire the BLM, Forestry Dept, and others to maintain the land and MANAGE IT FOR OUR ACCESS, PLEASURE, AND RECREATION. Now we are being told that everything belongs to the federal government and it is the fed's moral duty to keep any snooty citizens off their land. It also violates ADA regulations. Currently physically challenged citizens can easily access these treasured lands, but now only able-bodied people do so. Our last hope that this bill is not signed into law - please call, email, or fax President Obama - urging him not to sign the bill (contact information below) and to demand it be broken down into individual bills as they should be. Or, at the very least, he should line item veto the parts that should not be passed! (Tell him: Do not make over 3 million amateur Fossil Collectors, Rock Hounds and school children throughout the United States instant Federal Criminals. Do not wipe out the possibility of taxpaying citizens accessing approximately 8.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 300 million barrels of oil in a time when our country needs to become more self sufficient. Do not limit access to the wilderness lands to only saddle or pack animal and discriminate against the disabled and senior citizens. Remind him: Taking away legal access will not stop the people who disregard laws in the first place; it only takes away from those who already abide by the laws and do not destroy the lands. [and most importantly] With the economy in the shape it is in, there is no way to fund enforcement of these pork laden laws. To pass bills of this nature in today’s economy is contemptuous.)
