I have looked for opal in Nevada, Canada and Idaho. By FAR the best place I have found is Spencer Idaho, in the mine there - they are only open 5 weekends a year to the public, but the pickings are unbelievable - AND they are stable. Last month a 4th grade teacher there when we were found an unbelievable precious green opal filling a geode in her first 5 minutes - easily the best one I have ever seen.

Yes, I agree. Being originally from Idaho myself, I know what a literal "treasure trove" the State has to offer...GOLD, Silver, Opals, Star Garnets, etc. It is one of the best kept secrets in the U.S. for treasure hunters! However, I am a little bit unfamiliar with Spencer. Can you give a little more info please? What weekends is it generally open? Do you know of any business' that will buy your Opals? Have you had any luck in the mine there yourselves? If so, what monetary value? I wish you further success! I am heading back to ID (from AZ) to do some Gold Prospecting in the streams in the mountains. Am thinking about going to St. Maries to do some Star Garnet hunting for the first time. Sounds like fun! Thanks in advance! Smile
