Mark & Olly,
I teach 9th grade Geography, and used your adventures as a way to teach many different cultural concepts. It seemed that each new episode had some great lesson that was important for what I try to do with my students. I work very hard to show my students another side of living, to teach them to let go of their ethnocentric ways, to be able to understand that neither our way of life or anyone else's is the "better way". You all made that work so easy! We watched your show each week and had long discussions about the adventures. One week we ran short of time and were not able to have our "Machigenga Day"... I thought I would have kids in tears! At the beginning of the season, the kids were interested because the Machigenga were so odd to them and they were intrigued and a little worried about your safety. By the end of the season, they have become understanding of the hostile attitude toward outsiders and the reluctance and aversion to move into "Modern life". So many of my students have begun watching your show and other Travel Channel shows on their own with their parents. I have had many calls and emails from parents, asking how I was able to transform their child to where they enjoy something like your show! My students asked me to email you to see if there are plans for another voyage, or where they can find your past adventures. I had thought about having them write you all letters but had no idea where to send them. They have so many questions for you. Perhaps I will have them make accounts here in order to contact you. Thanks, Mr Lambert Blazer High School Ashland, KY, USA |
