I really enjoyed your show, saw it for the first time last night. But, I have been wondering how the Machigenga agreed to let the crew live close by? And how you made the separation between them and you guys. Also, who was translating and where were they in the scenes?
Mark and Olly talk in English then the tribe talk back in their language. Who does the translating? Do Mark and Olly know any of the language?
Where do the crew stay, how do they get those amazing video clips during the canoe rides, and what do they eat? Do they have helicopters bring them in supplies? Do they have their own rafts/boats?
Obviously there's a great deal of artful editing to make it look like M&O are "talking" to the people, but I also was wondering who was doing the translating, and just how much help the native translators give the guys on things like, "WE DON'T EAT DEER."
If you notice and watch closely, Anselmo speaks Spanish and Machigenga. He was the guide that led them into Korankorata. He is Machigenga, but belongs to a seperate village (the one that wears black face paint in the village games). He stays in Korankorata. You will notice that he is rarely far from Mark or Olly. The one time I was confused was when they were with the shaman. Anselmo was definately not there.
I am sure Anselmo was not the only one who could speak spanish with Mark and Olly, but the editing out of the translation is masterful! I mean, who would want to see everything spoken, then read the subtitles again? There was some spoken Spanish that was in the show, especially Anselmos speaking to Mark, I believe. I did not notice, but two of my foreign exchange students in my class noticed it.
