I apologize if this question has already been answered, but I was wondering why the people in the Machiguenga village are all called by Christian names (Jose, Jacinto, Ismael). From the show it didn't appear that the villagers were Christian or that they had much contact with Spanish speakers so I was wondering how this came about.

I didn't feel like the women had tribal names. Isn't Tatiana Russian? And Rosita would be a Spanish name. They're all over the board, really. Ismael certainly isn't Spanish.

You have to realize that this tribe does have contact with the outside world, however limited. Also, before Jose started the village, they lived in another village where they almost certainly spoke Spanish, even if it was only the younger generations or just a few people. Just another sign of cultural assimilation.

Although the names being changed is possible as well.
