And this series is quite possibly one of the best I've ever seen that really studies different tribal customs and cultures. It's interesting watching your (Mark & Olly) enculturation into the tribes, especially from an anthropological point of view.
However, have you ever thought of bringing a female anthropologist with you guys? Hey, I'm not saying that you don't try to do a good job of getting both the female and male sides of the same issue and I have long noticed (during the Kombai season) that Olly seems to be taking on a more feminine role than Mark in the tribal situations.....BUT maybe a female would be able to interact easier with the women of the tribes you live with? Okay, I know that in places like West Papua that might not be such a hot idea because of the periodic suangi scares (knowing that females are usually the targets of witchcraft accusations) and she might have to hightail it out of the area if a situation gets too explosive or something..... Just some food for thought. |

I am not an anthropologist, but as a woman I was very impressed when the machichenga left the final decision to the women to let the men stay.
