Since the last show aired Gianna has stayed on my mind. So I wrote an email to the Sabeti Lodge asking how she was doing and if they could provide any information and here is the reply I received: Mark and Olly stayed in Sabeti Lodge during their journey, especially in their way out from Korankorato, this ecotourism lodge managed by the Machiguengas is located in Timpia Native Community near Korankorato. Mark left Gianna there because he thought that conditions (food, care) were much better in this place that in Korankorato and they knew the people of the staff. Gianna was living freely in the lodge for about 5 months, growing and getting used to the contact of people, and in the last month people from CICADA FILMS and CEDIA were making the contacts and arrangement for getting her a place in a Sanctuary for monkeys in Moyobamba (north of Peru) were she could get professional care. Unfortunately before we could finish these arrangements (about three weeks ago) we received the sad news of the death of Gianna. Apparently she ate something that made her sick, and before they could do anything to cure her she died. It was really fast.
We can not blame anybody because, even when conditions are actually much better in the lodge than in Korankorato, they do not have any veterinary or specialist in wildlife care, we know they loved Gianna and did their best to make her happy.
After knowing the story of Gianna, it is impossible not to love her, that is why it is really sad for us to give this news. Sabety Lodge keeps many memories from Gianna and the whole experience of Mark and Olly, and the people they met there. You are welcome to visit the Sabeti Lodge were you will meet the scenario of these production as well as a great biodiversity (macaws, many other birds, monkeys of different species and many other mammals) all of them in the wild.
Well that was not exactly the news I expected to hear but at least now I wont worry and wonder so much about what's happening to her. Thanks Mark for sharing Gianna with us. The story made us laugh and cry while touching so many hearts. I know Mark is probably heart broken but wouldn't trade that experience for anything.
