How about a show bringing the Mek to the United States? The show could follow them seeing all the places and living like a Westerner. They may not ever want to go back.. It's worth a thought. It would be just as good... Razz

So, you want us to pluck them out of the only life they have ever known and strip them of their culture and make them just like everyone else? Why would that be good tv?
They have the option of living a western lifestyle, but they choose to keep to the ways they have known and cherished for eons. Who are we to tell them they are wrong, and should live like us?

Who said anything about saying they are wrong? The other tribe ended up getting clothes... please... what’s wrong with asking? They are smart enough to know what they want... who are you to decide they shouldn’t be shown another way... Look what happened after they found God. There would be nothing wrong with bringing them to the US and seeing them go to Disney or sleep in a house... Sit and eat a meal… Let the kids actually be kids for a while.. Wink

This is my opinion and as many have seen I am full of great opinions: I feel that much of the attraction for me and some others is the seemingly simple way of life, the love/care they have for each other, the innocence and purity of heart the Mek seem to have. While I am sure they would be in awe of our society why bring them to a place that we so desperately want to take a break from and complain about. As for letting the kids be kids..that is all perception. I grew up on a large family farm and I worked as a child and those are some of my fondest memories. Memories of family and kinship...Disney world was a bore for me when I was in 3rd grade, again all a matter of perception.

Please do not mis-understand me. If they *wanted* to come to the west, I would welcome them with open arms. I just do not feel that we should frog march them into loosing a way of life that they have embraced and loved for so long.
Once they discovered our ways, theirs would most likely be lost to them. I feel that in some ways it would be better to live as they do. They do not have the greed that defines how many of us live our lives. Always having to have more, make more and be better than everyone.
Watching them reminds me of how much we have lost from the pioneer days when people helped each other for the mutual good. Sure, we have an awesome knowledge of science and how things work but at what cost?

Although this is not realistic (and would be an exploitation of the Mek people) I would theoretically love to see a show where we could observe the Mek's reaction to our "modern" world, customs, and way of life.

My guess is that they'd find a lot of our world to be absurd. Especially the rampant depression in the Western world, the entitlement attitudes, the obesity epidemic here, and Westerners obsession with idealized fantasy "romance" as a basis for marriage (combined with the overwhelming dissatisfaction people have with their marraiges and relaitonships).

On a slightly different (but related) note: I sort of "get" the comment by a poster about letting the kids actually be kids for awhile. Although, in modern western culture we've seen that this isn't always such a treat. One only needs to look at the kids of generation Y who feel they're "owed" happiness, freedom and luxuries without having to work for them or be responsible. And they (and the culture) then suffer because of this.

My point is: for many people happiness is found in commitment and hard work, and not in their deliverance from it. How many people in our Western culture have all their basic needs met (and a ton of luxuries) and are nevertheless persistently depressed and feeling like they've been gypped and "deserve" better (a fancier car, a better body, a more perfect spouse, more money, etc.)

I wonder if the Mek even have words in their language for "depression" and "entitlement". Or if they'd fathom the concept of someone "deserving" a more luxurious lifestyle without grueling work.

Our country could only be improved if the MEK came to America. We could build our homes out of boards and leaves. We could walk around with our things in a gourd and the women could walk around with the mammary glands hanging. We need the MEK here. Just like the Hmong people and other's from poor countries. Ask the people of Lewiston, Maine how they will enrich your lives.
