While exploring Northern California, jumping from location to location, I came across a "luxury" Bed & Breakfast in the Napa Valley. I would love to offer my thoughts and explain to you just how luxury it is, but I have too much to say about the food and a short bit of time in which to write about it.
Normally, I am very easy to spot mistakes or lame attempts at/in creative cuisine, however, I was completely surprised (more like caught off guard) while enjoying my food. The following is an "outline" of what this unique experience was like:
Day One: On the pastry tray- Bite-size Churros. The kind that once you take a bite there are sweet sugar crystals stuck to your top lip and upper palate, your teeth crunching through the crispy texture, and the back of your throat and tongue tasting, feeling, the warm almost custard-like dough. On my plate- "Breakfast Lasagna"
On my thoughts- You're kidding. And other pessimistic thoughts on the chef attempting and failing (wrong herbs, flavors too strong to go with the coffee and orange juice). On the outcome and what happened- I did not, could not and did not want to stop eating. The noodles had a silky texture, but firm to the bite in the back of my mouth, the true red sauce tangy and savory, the house-made farmer's cheese mixed with the eggs was in perfect proportion and the pancetta was smoky; smoky, salty and seared until just perfect.
On my mind now- how curious it must have looked for me to have an equally curious love affair with my breakfast. I think I used my finger to rub the last ounce of the sauce off the plate.
On my mind when I went to sleep that night- Wonderful wines, earthy organic soils, beautiful greenery, my lunch I can't remember, and breakfast. There was this cheese, it was mixed with the eggs in the lasagna and there were churros. . . and berries. . .
