Santorini is a Greek Cycladic island, mainly famous for its volcanic soil, which is known as being very fertile. So, the products that are cultivated in Santorini are considered unique from many aspects and unbelievably delicious. I knew it theoretically, but this summer, I had the chance to discover it in practice too.

If and when you pass by Santorini – a must if you visit Greece – I totally recommend you to try the fava, the local cherry tomatoes and the chlorotyri, which is a kind of white, soft, not salty goat cheese. Fava is a yellow puree of split peas, served as an appetizer, with onion and olive oil. The Santorinian variety of the cherry tomatoes does not taste exactly like the common ones, it is sweet-sour and has thick skin – they say that it will be under a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) in a few years.

You should not miss the chance of trying the local wines, either. Santorini has been making wine since prehistoric years and they have a unique way of producing the Vinsanto wine, a sweet wine of sundried grapes, which is already under the title of PDO.
