Anthony,
Montserrat is what the carribean was 30 years ago. With little to no tourism and an active Volcano (which whipped out half the physical island including the capital of plymouth), Montserrat is both a peaceful getaway and a wonderful adventure. A short 15 minute flight from Antigua brings you a universe away. You won't find a Sandals here and the one "Hotel" on the island looks more like a set of 10 villas. The restaurants are tiny and often without air conditioning. Food is explained to you as chicken, beef, mutton, or fish. However, when it shows up expect your dish to have breadfruit, fried plantains, rice, salad, and other local fruits and veggies in addition to your carribean spiced (often Indian spiced)meat. The island is one of the safest in the carribean if not in the world. Only 3000-4000 people inhabit it. The bars, or rum shacks, are tiny and often look scary to an outsider. However, they are filled with wonderfully intelligent and beautiful people. The only country outside of Ireland to celebrate Saint Patricks day as a national holiday Montserrat is unusual and wonderful. Take a boat tour around the modern day pompeii like capital plymouth, scuba dive with Emmy and Andrew around Montserrats thriving coral reefs, take a hike looking for the 3rd most endangered species in the world the Montserrat Oriole, or just lay back on the black sand beaches where you will most likely be alone or maybe one of 3 other people.
Montserrat is a place like none other. The people are wonderful, the food is authentic and delicious, and the atmosphere is something you can't find anywhere else in the carribean. Please go to Montserrat and meet the people who are so proud of their little country that not even a Volcano that destroyed many of their homes could drive them away.
Go see what the Beatles, Clapton, and Sting all saw in Montserrat many years ago. It hasn't changed much. In fact its gotten much smaller and in some ways thats a good thing.
