Before you go "O, not again..." Just follow a few tips: 1) Hire the right (local) quide - you'll have more fun/traveling & 'll eat/rest much better. I can find you more than 1 person ready/ eager to help.
2) Difference between Moldavian & Romanian people (bears down to very long history: not to be prejudice, but Romanians 've always considered themselves more intelligent/above their Moldavian neighbors who're to them more farmers & cheap labor force; difference in characters of people - most Moldavians though thought to be too naive/joked around that they're not too smart, but they wear their hearts on the sleeve, & 're the most hospitable. How it shows, with all its POWERTy/ LACK OF JOBS, somehow the capital (very undermaintained) but cleaner than New York city of Chishinau Somehow made to NEW YORK TIMES TRAVEL SECTION ~ 1 year or 6 months ago as one of the best party towns. & it's not just wine....
3). Food - hey Moldavian food made it as far as to the most rescent Emmy's, - not too bad for this unknown/poor/agrarian/little peace of black black soil; & before you travel overseas you can stop by Denver for a taste (my mom's cooking will make you feel good) (just email me in advance a little), or check the large community of Moldavians (from Orhey, & other places....) in New York. Not to mention, that all the sudden people 're interested in Moldovan rich reserve of heirloom vegitables, where tomatoes taste like real tomatoes...& so much more.
4). Back to the history lesson: for many centuries Moldova's been fought over by Romans/Spaniards/Turks/Austro-Hungarians/Russian/Romanians due to it's reach land.As a result (all negative politics aside) it's like a huge pot of awesomely tasting stew with a variety of flavors & traditions, & it's definately worth tasting.
5). If you come there during the right seasonal times, wieves/landscapes/ sheer bounty of harvest on display on market late August/ Early September is awesome; I wish I had a camera for all those years we lived there...
6). & Finally WINE: it might be the French label, but just a few years ago wine made from MOLDAVIAN GRAPES bottled under French label won a GOLD MEDAL at a very prestigious competition; & how many towns have an ENTIRE TOWN underground made out of limestone cellars with perfectly aged wines & good selection of real cheeses. I've participated in vinemaking (silly as it might sound) since I was 3 years old at my grandparents' farm. & in my family close and extended we know A FEW things about it... So, if you're truely into this new 'AGROTURISMO' thing, you have to visit Moldova, let us know, we'll help you set it up for the best times of the year.
