sorry you guys but after reading all the comments in here and the people that are such negatives, maybe bourdain should not visit philippine, i am a filipino and yes, it's so embarrasing that we keep nagging him, if he don't like philippine then his not welcome in our proud country...i rather not see him in the philippine, for my country welcome people that only wants to be there, we don't like plastic..so better don't go there.... let's be proud of philippines...for it has it's own pride...let's welcome people that are worth welcoming for...

ok... you keep writing over your Filipino pride-- so what are you 'PROUD OF"?
what's your stance the way that country is being run..the corruption..
the Phil just placed 140th( from 133 last year of 180 countries) as one of the slowest to start a business. Singapore placed #1 not surprisingly, HK even 3rd) Phil is considered as one of the most corrupt goverments in the world.
PRIDE is all well & dandy.. but of what?!
i just watched ASIA TODAY from Korean tv-- & it featured Manila & it's abject poverty. so pathetic. What a let-down after their featuring Beijing & it's progress.
PRIDE.. IN IT'S TRUEST TERMS & MEANING-- I THINK ONE MUST READ BOURDAIN'S INSIGHT WITH THE VIETNAMESE.
NOW, THAT'S WHAT IT MEANS TO HAVE-- TRUE PRIDE.
pinoys in truth has NO pride-- but lots of EGO. why so defensive.
time to wake up- & see things for what it truly is.

READ-- A COOK'S TOUR.. & HIS CHAPTERS ON VIETNAM..& you also add-- NaSTY BITS.
No i'm NOT SPIKY.. but truthful & unapologetic with it-- I do not romanticise the state of that country.. I wish I could. AS I am sooo shocked at the state the Phil is in.. how I wish it'll have true cause & reasons to b e 'proud'.( having a charice going oprah does not count)
PS.. Vietnam will recover faster from the annihilation Of US & the Kymers then the Phil over Marcos & after.
don't mistake 'ego' with Pride..
PRIDE-- BOURDAIN GOT IT RIGHT.

oops... freudian slip.. HIGHWAY TO DEATH.
yeah, all his musings on vietnam quite profound. made me watch QUIET AMERICAN AGAIN.. too bad I've no copy of Indo-chine at hand.( need to buy it)
notice no prominent writer has ever written about phil ever. no one like Graham Greene.. all Phil get is a footnote in McArthur's bio.

ah, you obviously didn't get what i meant-- as you also sidestepped the issue of the state of that country. that's Ok-- why that country is in the state is in-- & will hardly prosper, i'm afraid. you talk of Phil & it's islands?! NOTHING UNIQUE ABOUT IT! when countries like MALAYSIA can & does offer the same kind of Locales, vistas,sunsets/sunrises & tropical breezes!!! ( having the same geographical position) plus more types of food.. modern roads........... PRIDE?? now about less of it-- & have more common sense?!

as for those 7,100 islands?? not all of them are habitable as most of them keep sinking into the seabed.most of them can only be considered as islets, anyway.
there's really only 3 major islands in Phil.last time I checked.Even then there's still no modern ferryboat system that links them like they have in Hong Kong.

well, that's not in Phil.
a lot of foreign investors are doing that with Indonesia( now even vietnam) not too long ago-- on my Asian cable-- it showed a very POSH hotel newly built in Java.. by Europeans, right in the middle of a beauty spot/jungle? ( hard to describe-- where they found another thousand yrs old Hindi temple.. even older than ANKOR WAT but smaller in scale. why, I'm sad for Phil-- this should be happening there but isn't-- bec that country is such a mess! and inverstments-- is just like'consuelo de bobo' compared to what's going on with the rest of southeast Asia.

one thing I've learnt from my interest in history-- just follow the FOOD & RELIGION' you'll trace who was doing what t o whom-- who influenced what culture.
Southeast Asia has a lot to thank India & China . the Phil is comparatively young & primitive compared to t he rest of Asia. & I really do believe it's bec of it's location--Spain & US eventually used it & exploited it for this.. but for it's own development as a unified civilization?? pretty much got lost in the shuffle. why it was mostly pagan when the Spanish came-- why the southern islands became Muslims(close to Indonesia-- i still believe those islands were once outter islands of Indonesia until spain changed it)
the deveopment of Phil mostly came f rom trade with it's neighbours & even then not much of it-- compared to rest of southeast Asia.. again it's bec of accessiblity.Indians were the ones who helped built Ankor Wat-- as they traded annually with the Cambodians..The chinese brought the know how- of their rice terraces everywhere they went-- one can see their own in China today--Vietnam.. it's not just in Phil.
Thailand is the only country that was never colonized by Europeans( & they are justly proud of this fact) or anyone. As far as that goes.even China nor the Mongolians got to them-- but they were influenced by the Indians.
