This is not so much a suggestion of where (Walla Walla, Wa) as a suggestion of who (Charles Smith) Tony should visit. Walla Walla has been called the "next Napa Valley" by many folks in the know in the US wine industry. If this were a show dedicated to wine, you couldn’t do just one episode on this region and do it justice. The wineries and wine makers of the region have attracted some highly experienced restaurateurs and very talented chefs. There really are some fantastic things going on gastronomically in the area. On top of that, one of their main exports, Walla Walla Sweet Onions, are internationally known.

But, my main reason for pleading for a visit from Tony is to have him meet Charles Smith. Now, Charles Smith doesn’t know me, but I know him and his fantastic wines (K Vintners, Charles Smith Wines, etc.). Charles is a larger than life personality that is sooooooo entertaining. He’s an ex-rock band manager that still rocks black t-shirts, tats and long kinky hair. He’s not your typical swirl and sniff wine snob (not even close). If you visit his tasting room you’ll be bombarded with loud rock playing in the wine production area, incense burning in the winery bathroom and unvarnished stories of how Charles’ wine come to be.

The man is not afraid to drop f-bombs in any sentence and could care less if you like it. What he does care about are his wines and whether the folks that drink them enjoy them. He’s an absolute riot to be around. Do a quick Google search on Charles and you’ll find tons of good background info.

I envision a segment with Tony and Charles sampling Charles’ great wines over some of the excellent dishes served by local chefs. Their two personalities would match to create a hell of an entertaining segment. What I wouldn’t give to be a fly on the wall when that happens…
