I have to say that Andrew reminds me of the tourists I often see while on vacation. It's the "Oh my, I just got rooster blood poured on my head, honey take a picture" syndrome. It's very superficial with out care for underlying impact, ideas and history. Everything becomes a photo opp and nothing more. I think the show needs to be a bit sensitive when airing some of these segments. As a child that grew up in a Santeria household I can say it's not a fun thing to watch the heads ripped off of roosters, chicken, goats, pigeons and see people covered in blood. Maybe my experience makes me a little sensitive to this, but at least put a warning so kids can leave the room. And I'm not sure the "look mom no hands" type of expressions are very respectful considering an animal was just killed for your viewing pleasure.
Not even being Cuban I thought it was sort of weird to march in a May Day parade and think it's cool. Many Cubans lost their freedom when communism took over. I'm in favor of lifting the embargo on Cuba but come on... think a little.
Andrew's personality definitely has a place, and he looks great in front of the camera, but he needs to be little more aware of what he's doing. Some of the customs and or practices have much history and should be viewed with respect and reverence, not treated like a ride in Disney World.
My wife and I watched the episode on Cuba and we respect that there are Cuban Americans that are able to visit Cuba. Unfortunatley for the vast majority of Americans, traveling to Cuba is not an option. Is there something that the Travel Channel knows, that Americans do not, with regards to be able to visit this unspoiled country? The Travel Channel is meant to intice one to travel to lands that the hosts visit. In that respect - why Cuba? It is an unfortunate tease for Americans who wish they could travel to Cuba. Unless of course the Travel Channel is able share how this could be done.
