I fell in love with Belize a couple of years ago and I've decided to make it my full time residence.
I've purchased a condo at Sapphire Beach on Ambergris Caye, and just can't wait to move in! The island is gorgeous. Crystal blue waters, white san beaches, and a laid back lifestyle make this the place I want to be! If you haven't been to Ambergris Caye, you owe it to yourself to come and visit. |

Hi there,
Belize offers some great incentives for retirement. Check out http://belizeretirement.org/ for more info. As for cost, you will find many things are less expensive, and some are more expensive. If it's made or grown locally, you will feel like you are getting a bargain. Things that have to be imported, like cars or computers are expensive. That is where the Belize Retirement Program comes in handy, since it allows you to bring these things into the country at little or no fee. Safety is not a real concern. There are parts of Belize City where you will want to avoid (just like you would avoid parts of many cities in the US). Other than that, you will find that the people are friendly, helpful, and look out for their neighbors. Medical isn't at US technological standards, but the doctors are generally well trained and educated. Where I live on the island of Ambergris Caye, there are several doctors and clinics, and they are more than adequate to help with basic needs. Cost of medical care is very reasonable. Housing is variable. You can spend well over a million dollars buying a mansion on the beach, or you could spend $50K for s small house in the jungle. If you are looking for a beach lifestyle, then you really need to consider the Cayes (islands off the mainland). If you like a rainforest lifestyle, then you should check out the western part of the country. I know I am biassed, but I think that Ambergris Caye is just gorgeous. There is a large community of expat American, Canadian and Brits. I chose a home at Sapphire Beach due to the great beach, the quality of the construction, the amenities and the value compared to other beachfront developments. Before you make any decisions, go to Belize and check out as much as you can. Sapphire Beach offers a free 3 night hotel stay on the island so you can come check out what they offer. This gives you time to see if island life is for you and to look at some other properties on the island. Good luck. Maybe I'll see you in Belize! |
