If you are looking for a nice, secluded beach area, the outer banks of North Carolina is the way to go. We have been to the OBX several times and loved it. There are areas where you can drive on the beach. Pick your spot and lay-out all day if you wish with few others (if any) around. The sand is nice, and water is clear in spots ... not crystal clear like spots of FL or the Caribbean of course, but nice. If you like lighthouses there are several to see including Cape Hateras. We usually stay in / around Kill Devil Hills.
