Samantha needs to understand her attire is quite inappropriate for temples and opera in China. Shorts are not proper dress and reinforce negative perceptions of clueless/ignorant American travellers.

Please understand that Samantha as the host of the show has a stylist and producers and they are the ones to whom you should address your concern.

Saitong, I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU! Her attire is EXTREMELY incorrect for her travel in ALL of Asia, Chengdu, Beijing episodes etc.

Showing shoulders in Asia is considered insulting and that the woman is 'a bit loose' or 'wild'. I won't even get into her wearing shorts. She might as well ask Roseanne Barr to be her guest traveler and they could dress the same.

And Leia, shame on blaming the stylist. Samantha should know better and who cares if she is wearing designer clothes that could/have been seen in Vogue magazine.
being a properly dressed Ambassador as a traveler to other countries, consciously and even subconsciously setting an example to the American public of what to wear in a country when traveling is part of her job, which unfortunately is being SERIOUSLY OVERLOOKED. And the lack of those responding or bringing up her attire just plainly reinforces the fact that few Americans notice or are in tune with what is or is not proper to wear when being a guest in another country- where the guest- no matter what- represents their whole country. A trampy thin spaghetti strap hot red satin looking top with shorts on the great wall???? How shameful! and to think Chinese tourists and others from around the world see her being filmed-which draws attention and what must they think???? I can only imagine how the crew is dressed, in grungy khakhi cargo shorts and t shirts with most likely tasteless logos... what ever happened to classy dress for a crew with a proper pair of pants and a golf shirt as a filming uniform with the travel channel logo.

as for Samantha it appears in some countries she blatantly just disregards the travel book sections on how to dress proper.

the next show will be in the middle east- why not wear a thin white tank top with a black bra and a mini skirt with flip flops. oh- or is this what the stylist is wearing in all countries off cameras who is probably 25 years old and clueless.

even my husband commented on her dress and asked if i thought Samantha even bothered to read a travel guide or did I think her clothing was just another marketing ply to fuel consumerism and her celebrity status...

We are a couple in our late 50’s and have traveled the world. We are big fans of Samantha Brown and watch her show regularly. We were particularly interested in her visit to China as we made the same trip two years ago. We have enjoyed watching and reliving some of our experiences and now are planning to go back for a longer stay next time.

We have one concern that bothers us. We are not prudes by any stretch of the imagination but we always make sure to be aware of the sensitivities and customs of the peoples we are visiting. We were disappointed to see that Samantha’s wardrobe didn’t seem to consider the modest nature of the Chinese people and her clothing did little to show respect or reverence to the significance of their cultural sites and icons. When we traveled in China, we never saw local people wearing short shorts or low cut/strapless tops and we feel that the shows choice of wardrobe was disrespectful to the people she was visiting and the American people she was representing.

Just a comment from an experienced traveler.

I certainly can not answer for Samantha or her crew, but I just assumed that this being the Travel Channel...and Samantha has traveled the world, she would have the experience and knowledge to check into ideas and views of the country first. If not, then I'm quite shocked that something like this slipped thru the cracks. In the meantime, I'm just giving Sam credit for knowing this before hand.

But I too wondered the same thing while watching this series.

From my own standpoint, the shorts didn't bother me at all. When I visited China 2 years ago, there were plenty of tourists who wore shorts. I also wore shorts while climbing the Great Wall. The country is hot and humid most of the time and I would rather feel comfortable than sticky and miserable. Heck Guys, my tour group leaders, who were all native Chinese and 2 of them were women also wore shorts. Alot of young Chinese girls and men were wearing shorts and T-shirts when I climbed the wall.

Okay, maybe the spaghetti strapped tank top was a little much, but to call her out and pretty say that everything she wore was wrong/inappropriate/trashy is going a little overboard.

For the most part, I think she is a very nice and classy dresser.

I see you've met my 8th grade Spanish teacher.

Seriously, I'm not saying that things such as dress weren't overlooked but this is a TV show and each person has their own role. Samantha didn't ask for overly done purple eyeshadow and cake makeup but I suppose that's her fault, too.

Instead of yelling about something that has already happened why not make suggestions for future travel? I'm sorry if you are offended.

I'm not solely blaming the stylist. There are researchers for these shows you do realize. I never said anything about designer clothes from Vogue. LMAO You think that I read Vogue? LOL

According to my Lonely Planet travel guide (6th edition) on China, it says "Shorts and T-shirts are respectable summer wear.." And yes, I know the attire in China is generally not revealing but if you want to be critical of Sam on this, fine, but not me. Her shows on China are really a great promo for China, and it seems she truly enjoyed herself on this trip.

I looked at my photo album from my China trip years ago, and I see that I wore shorts, my sister wore tank tops, and my dad also wore shorts (of course, in places of worship, I always made sure my shoulders & knees were covered). It was October so it was around 60 - 80deg F where we went, and it did get hot walking around a lot. We were in a Chinese tour group where some wore shorts too, and none of the locals seemed bothered by this. Besides, tourists means $$ to the locals which I think they care about more than our attire.

BTW, in the Beijing episode, during the duck dinner, one of the Chinese girls at Sam's table is wearing a top/dress with spaghetti straps. And I saw others in these episodes wearing shorts or short skirts in the hutongs, train stations, etc.

I totally disagree with all of you saying Samantha is dressed inappropriately. First of all, she is a 37 year old woman not a 55 year old woman so why should she have to dress like one. I understand that each country has its culture that we Americans should respect but Sam was dressed like an American because she is American. We don't criticize other cultures that dress unlike us when they are visiting America why should Sam have to dress differently? I think she looks great and has a great fashion sense for girls to look up to. I know for sure if I went to China or anywhere I would hope to look just as great as Sam does when she travels. Everyone needs to lay off and enjoy the program. If you do not like it than don't watch and leave the wonderful, entertaining, fashionable Sam for those of us that fully appreciate her.

I didn't see anyone complain or even stare at her. I think if anyone would have, the crew would have made Samantha change into something else. I'm sure the Chinese people have seen American clothing before. In fact, many are wearing them. It wasn't a big deal, in my opinion.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I just read her blogs on China and I recall her mentioning a stylist. She didn't say Christina, but just a "stylist" and a Chinese crew! Surely they would have pointed out the fashion err.

saitong brought up a good point. This is what I think. I feel saitong was correct about dressing for temple or an opera. Saitong was only talking about dressing for temple&opera and not just walking around. Sam dressed much too casually for these places. But hiking up the Great Wall of China, or anyplace she was hiking, of course wearing shorts should be alright. It was hot out there, I'm sure. Wearing slacks or a skirt would be silly when hiking, and the shoes have to be good for hiking too. Not high heels! LOL! Like nunesy said, other people were wearing casual clothing too, and not a big deal! Sam was also riding a bike, so it makes sense to wear shorts. I have to admit, I've never been to China, but if I do ever go, I would dress up for temple or the opera to show some respect, and nice cool casual clothes for walking and hiking.
My two cents.

I remember awhile ago, I saw a picture in the newspaper of Hillary Clinton and her daughter in India.
They both had those Seik dots on their foreheads.
I thought that it was disengenuous-seeming.

Sometimes I accidentally read a "manners"
column in the newspaper, and realize that
if a person were displaying those "manners"
to me in my house I would think it it was actually rude.

I like Samantha and anybody else that I like dressed in whatever they like to wear.
Also, if you want pleasantries- the tourist dollars should suffice.

Clueless and ignorant people are everywhere
aren't they?

You seem like a very angry person with WAY too much time on your hands. But we did get a good laugh at your posting.

I just watched a preliminary, warm-up basketball game for the Olympics in Shanghi, China. At halftime Chinese cheerleaders did a routine dressed in short skirts, bare midriffs and bare shoulder tops. Even their navels showed. How disgraceful! Maybe they should ban basketball from China because it's not in keeping with the culture. Also swimming and volleyball have skimpy uniforms. Shameful!
