Bongards started on October 18, 1908 when a group of surrounding farmers met for the purpose of organizing a Cooperative Creamery. It was decided a brick building would be constructed and shortly thereafter the process of buttermaking was started. In February, 1909 the first shipment of butter was sold to a customer in New York. Freight to ship the butter to New York was a whooping $12.03.
There was only one employee and that was the buttermaker. This meant that since the creamery was a cooperative, each shareholder had to help with the work such and cutting and hauling ice for cooling and other various duties. Currently their are two plants. One in Perham, MN making the natural cheese and Whey factions, and the Bongards, MN plant which makes the processed cheese. Bongards ships its products internationally. http://www.bongards.com |
