John,
The Archway Cookie is a great American story. Started in a home kitchen in Michigan, the company est'd its HQ in Battle Creek,MI with one of its major bakeries est'd in Ashland, OH in the early 1950s. The company went through various ownership situations (good and bad, e.g. being owned by Parmalat, which went bankrupt). The company was sold to Catterton Partners a few years ago...a typical story of "bad American capitalism". Catterton buried it in debt and closed it in early Oct '08 with absolutely no notice given to employees: http://www.times-gazette.com/news/article/4439421 Archway is currently being sold through a bankruptcy process and we expect Lance (www.lance.com) to be the winning bidder. I have met company officials in my role as Ashland Co. economic developer, and they appear to be a great American company. The Archway Cookie will once again come home to Ashland. The sale will close on Dec. 5th and we expect ovens to actually be fired up before Christmas. This will be a huge gift for Ashlanders, esp. the 278 that abruptly lost their jobs and now have a great chance for re-employment. We would love to share our joy with Made in America. Please contact me at 567-203-8109. Evan Scurti |
