I am junior in college and I make it a point to travel during my breaks. Mind you, I am a student so my travels are fundage limited. Even though I dont have a lot of money throughout the semester to travel and stay in great hotels, I try to stay in posh, modern hotels instead of classy, ritzy ones. So far my favorite one in the midwest has been Hotel 71. I have stayed at the great hotels in Chicago while traveling with my parents, but the cool thing about this hotel versus the Four Seasons is that it caters to the mid 20's late 30's international crowd. Being a first gen. American, many of my European family and friends prefer this hotel over the other Chicago hotels because of the modern, techy lobby. Plush and oversizes furniture set against a very moody background with dramatic lighting. The Hotel 71 staff are also just as international as its guest. Behind the counter are flat screen t.v's showcasing local and international short films. As you check into your room, your movements are shadowed by a great soundtrack that follows you onto the elevator. Which are color coded for those who drink during their stay. Dont want to leave the hotel to have a great time? well, Hotel 71 has a night club in the hotel as well as a very bistro like diner. The rooms all have a view of the city and its great bridges. The rooms have down pillows and down duvets partnered with a great high tech room. The bathrooms were ok. On the other note, the other patrons were very engaging, a very young and hip crowd as stated before who will talk to you in the elevator and invite you to a party. while there my girlfriend and I went to a party with the niece of chinese ambassador to the U.S. and boy was that a party! It may not cost a ton of bucks to stay but the atmosphere, guest relations and the people make staying at Hotel 71 a perfect fit for a great vacation in the windy city. Total money spent during that weekend? $350 (room, drinks, House of Blues dinner and Hotel 71 umbrella)

The Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza in Cincinnati,OH. This is a historical hotel (with it's own ghost story I might add). We weren't fortunate enough to see the "Lady in green".....however we went in search of her and *did* feel a cold chill go through us when we walked off the elevator on "her floor". Aside from the history, this is a beautiful hotel in the best possible location in downtown Cincinnati. This is where we will be staying every time we visit.

The best hotel I've ever been to (and trust me there have been a ton!) is Disney's Wildnerness Lodge. The atmosphere was so fun, and it was a little ways off of the beaten path, so you were somewhat sucluded. It was great!

Oh man.. it's hard to pick one hotel. The Disney hotels are probably the nicest I've ever been to (Grand Floridian and the Wilderness Lodge), their service is very hard to compare to. The other Disney hotels are great too, but those two are my favorites. When I go to southern CA I'll revisit this. It looks like there are some really nice beach hotels down there.

My wife and I recently caught an episode of "Great Hotels" and saw The Mission Inn in Riverside, California. We live in Palm Springs-about an hour away-and we never knew we had such a great hotel so close to home. Just a day ago we returned from an overnight stay at the Mission Inn. Let me tell you, it is a beautiful place! (In fact, we decided to get remarried in the chapel next year on our anniversary.) I took about a billion pictures, all postcard perfect of course. The episode doesn't to the hotel justice. You have to see it to believe it! www.missioninn.com

Definitely a three-way tie for first place:
For a magical tropical fantasy, there is no place on earth like The Atlantis in Paradise Island! It is an amazing wonderland of marine life and grand luxuriuos opulence. Atlantis is the kind of place that makes everyone say "WOW!"
For THE best service (they anticipate your every need), terrific central location, and spotless pristine rooms like I've never seen: believe it or not, The Howard ******* Hotel in Beijing China. The entire staff is in top form all the time and every person is polite and super-helpful. They will arrange anything you need; including excursions with English speaking drivers, to a spectacular Chinese foot massage. This place is the best kept secret in Beijing.
For a unique romantic escape: Ramora Bay Club, on Harbour Island in the Bahamas. This funky French boutique style hotel has it all: atmosphere, delicious cusine, and an ultra-relaxing vibe. The rooms are totally unique (with original artwork by Picasso, Braque, etc.), four-poster beds, and fresh flowers daily. The French chef makes the most magnificent food we've EVER had (better than in Paris itself). The staff is so friendly and helpful.... after 2 days, they felt like family. They arranged in-room massages for us and even brought us breakfast in bed (which we ate on our spacious veranda overlooking the bay). This place is so special.... we almost didn't want to share it!

by FAR, The Greenbrier. I've been three fabulous times, and each time was better than the last. Oh, and if you go, do the white water rafting. It is one of the best things I've EVER done
Runner up would be the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club in Ponte Verda Florida. I've stayed there too many times to count, but it is spectacular.
Also great were the Broadmoor, the Ritz Carlton on the Boston Common, the Plaza, and the Chatham Bars Inn.

The Hyatt Pier 66 in Fort Lauderdale Florida, is the most beautiful hotel I have ever seen, right on the Intracoastal waterway. Million dollar yachts are parked right close by, the grounds are absolutlely immaculate. I had the pleasure of experiencing the Presidential Suite. WOW! That's the best way to sum it up....

Check this site for what has to be the most wonderfully kitchy hotel in American history [besides the teepees in Rialto, CA on Route 66]: http://www.lileks.com/institute/motel/The Gobbler had to be the finest. Just look at the decor. Before you get out your Visa/MC, just know that the Gobbler has been razed, and with it your hopes of an interesting night's rest.

If you are traveling to Jaisalmer India anytime soon, you will want to stay at the Hotel Nachana Haveli. Not only is it a herritage palace/hotel, but they offer GREAT camel safaris! The beds are cozy, the rooms are sensational, the massages and facials are to die for after your safari, they have a quiet courtyard to read or visit the other guest, and the best part is a restaurant that over looks the fort with a very friendly staff!
