Watched the show last night, Wonderful!!! My mother and I are going to be in Paris Oct 13-15,08. I couldn't write fast enough to take notes. Now if only you were also going to Rothenburg, Germany our trip would be that much easier.
I hate to sound like a broken record (see my previous post on the Tuscany show), but flying to Paris for the weekend seems nearly impossible and mostly undesirable...especially to do fairly uneventful, ho-hum things like Sam does in this episode. There just doesn't seem to be any compelling reason to go overseas for a quick weekend trip, only to be a couple grand poorer and sleep-deprived for the first couple days after your return. I think someone else on this board might have already mentioned it, but these European weekend excursions might have gone along better as a compainion to "Passport to Europe"...the thought of going to Paris for the weekend while you happen to be in England or Spain isn't such a bad idea.
Don't get me wrong: A bad day on Sam's show is still better than most anything the Travel Channel has to offer these days (9-year-old shows about Vegas, Bourdain spending a half hour at a time worshipping himself, or Andrew Zimmern eating a still-alive baby kangaroo). I guess I've just come to expect more from Sam and her shows.
Actually, the last time I was in Paris was on a weekend jaunt with my daughter. We took the Eurostar from London's St Pancras Station to the Paris Gare Nord, hit a few fine restaurants, did a few touristy things (Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Montmarte, etc.), visited some of my old friends, and the daughter shopped 'til I dropped.
DBZ, it may be that for now you can't work in a Paris weekend, but some of us who watch SB's programs can, trust me. I hope that one day you will drop in on Paris - you'll be quite glad you did.
Now, if only I could convince Capttuttle to make the trip ...
intl_doc, If the stock market leaves me with any money, I definitely plan on taking a nice, long vacation to London, Paris, and hopefully Milan or Venice if I get a chance early next Spring. It's been too long since I've been to Europe.
It could be years now, IntlDoc, before a battered Tuttle can ever travel anywhere after this week and in fact this last whole year. Unbelievable. I think it's time for a change myself. But I must be a mental traveller now, and into whose hands as virtual travel guide would we rather leave ourselves than Ms. Brown's? That's our consolation for this week. So Paris some day, perhaps. Not for rollerblading ever, I assure you, but to see what should be seen there in the City of Light.
(P.S. Recall Audrey Hepburn is wiped out financially in Charade, kicked out of her posh Paris apartment, but somehow ends up, after a little contretemps, just fine. Maybe we will too.)
I'm a little late on this one, but I finally just watched the Paris episode and it is my absolute, hands down favorite episode of Great Weekends. It reminded me a little bit of Passport to Europe but fresher and newer in a good way. And it made my craving for another trip to Paris even bigger than it already is! Like Sam, I have always wanted to explore the Marais. And I'm definitely going to do the Pari Roller Friday night thing...that looked like so much fun.
Hi - What was the store Samantha Brown went to in Passport to Paris. It was a designer discount store on one of the main shopping streets. I beleive it had the name Anee or Annie in it's name. I am ging in a few weeks and would like to go there. Thanks!
Watched the show today. It was GREAT! Loved the way you showed us things off the beaten path. Thanks for showing us your favorite things and interacting with real people. Sam, You Rock!
Paris. What a place to spend a weekend. I know logistically Paris does not seem like a weekend getaway but what a way to go, if you can pull it off- I say go for it.
I have to say- Roller Blading thru Paris is incredible- i can't roller blade but Samantha definitely knows how to make it look like the thing to do.
Paris has a lot of touristy things to see- and if I went to Paris I wouldn't want to miss them, but this episode really showed a more personal view of paris- the square they walked thru was incredible. Paris is a very neighborhood driven place, and seeing it that way really appeals to me as much as the touristy things. It's so very French.
I love Samantha Brown and all her travels. I believe she has the best job in the world. And....I want her job! So, I have started a blog dedicated to travel, food, fun, and best of all, BEING THE NEXT SAMANTHA BROWN! So, join me as we talk about the joys of travel and share pictures of our experiences! Right here at http://nextsb.blogspot.com/! Hope to see you there!
