I am a huge fan of poker and enjoying both playing and watching it on television. I must have watched the 2003 WSOP about 10 times and never get sick of it. One thing I cant stand is watching the celebrities play poker. Most of them dont have a clue how to play poker. Last night on the Hollywood Home Game one of the players, Loilita Davidson had the nut full house and was the last player and she checked twice at the end! Lou Diamond Phillips described himself as "a poker animal" and said he lies awake at night replaying poker hands. He should find another hobby because he is clueless as a poker player. I would love to have any of these fish in my home game. Then I could probably afford the entry fees to some of these tournaments. Does anyone (who is a real poker player) enjoy watching these stiffs play.

FYI:

Lou Diamond Phillips has made the final table of the weekly Sunday night no limit tournament $330 buy-in) at Commerce Casino regularly, i.e. once or twice EACH MONTH, against stiff competition.

He certainly has more clue than you do.

Who are you, The Poker Authority. He certainly didnt play well last night on the Hollywood Home Game. Maybe he dumbs down his game because he is playing other celebrities. I think its ignorant for you to comment on my game as you have never seen me play. Do you really think he played well on last night's game?

I said that Lou Diamond Phillips had more clue that you do because you obviously had no idea that Phillips is a tournament poker professional who plays several medium buy-in tournaments each week, usually in the Los Angeles area, and makes final table regularly (about once every two weeks.)

LA, not Las Vegas, has the toughest mid-major ($200-$1000 buy-in) regular poker tournament circuit in the world, with somewhere around 3 to 5 times the number of pro and semi-pro players compared to Vegas.

Anyone who is someone in the sport of tournament poker has a scouting report on Lou Diamond Phillips in his or her database, complete with tournament performance history, playing style, and betting patterns.

(Even the greenest rookie semi-pro has the book on Phillips. If you don't know where to find the data, then you don't take the sport seriously enough.)

Just because someone plays in a "Celebrity" tournament and loses doesn't means he is clueless.

Unlike regular WPT events, the "Hollywood Home Game" tournaments was designed with a blind structure for a short tournament so anyone who loses a few pots early was going to be in trouble.

What happened at the WPT Hollywood Home Game: Phillips was a bit confused by Davidovich's slow plays (not betting even with the nut hand at last position). By the time Phillips figured out Davidovich's game (a passive calling station who is afraid to do her own betting), the damage to Phillips' stack was already done to the point where he couldn't make the blinds and antes.

Conversely, just because someone who is able to outlast a professional in a "Celebrity" tournament doesn't mean he or she has any clue. Exhibits A and B: Fred Willard and Lolita Davidovich. Those two made dozens of mistakes that anyone who has read a book or two on no-limit hold'em could notice.

Other tournament poker professionals who have played in "Celebrity" TV tournaments include Mimi Rogers (who actually made the money at the 2004 WPT event in San Jose) and Ben Affleck, both of whom have had their share of problems against novice players in "Celebrity" TV tournaments.

(Remember Affleck getting s-u-c-k-ed out on the river pot after pot by "Evil" Willie Garson? Even Jesus Christ couldn't win against "Evil" Willie that night with the cards running over him.)

The quality of poker played in these celebrity tournaments is understandably low. It doesn't make it any more interesting that the players are celebrities. Bad poker is bad poker. Period.

By the way, neither Mimi Rogers or Ben Affleck are tournament pro's. They earn their living acting, not playing hack poker on weekends.

Don't you find it interesting even in a "stop and look at a car accident" type of way?

But NOT for the poker aspect. I do agree that most of them kind of **** (but I don't know that I'd do any better in that situation.) And, I think people who really play a lot (ie Mimi Rogers, Ben Affleck, James Woods) have a tougher time against other celebs for the same reason it's hard to play a loose player. You never know what they are going to have, and might just draw a hand with.

But, I enjoy listening to them make fun of each other, so I watch. Besides what else is on at 6:00 pm... not much.

The poker world certainly doesn't think like you do.

Ben Affleck won the $10000 buy-in Commerce Casino "California State Poker Championship" in June.

If that doesn't make Affleck a tournament pro, I don't know what will.

For those that hate Celebrity Poker Showdown as much as I do, and many others, I just got this shirt from these guys...

www.slowplaying.com, I think its the 4th or 5th example... Ive worn it to a couple tournaments, and I get comments on it all the time, good and bad, but its always interesting thats for sure...

And I guess I'll have to apologize to Lou when I see him, although Ill ask him for $20 for the money I've spent on all the **** movies hes made in the last decade. Maybe he should spend more time playing cards than making movies!

I do not like watching the poker tournaments. This is not travel. Please keep this channel to travel only. Put poker on ESPN.
