I often travel alone. Before leaving I make up a list of each flight (including date, time, airline and flight number - starting and ending locations). This is printed in large type and enclosed in a plastic sheet protector and placed both inside the suitcase and in a pocket on the outside. Included is my cell phone number (a world phone from Verizon) and home phone, no physical address, just the city. I also use a lockable waist purse from PacSafe; it has steel mesh which cannot be hacked into from the front nor cut off the waist, and a padlock which keeps the zippers from being opened. In it is all money, passport, credit cards and one unlocked (on purpose) part for lipstick, comb, small flashlight, hand cleaner, tissues and a handkerchief. By having a cotton handkerchief I'm guaranteed I'll be able to dry my hands. I wash the handkerchief nightly and stick it to a mirror to dry. Another favorite is a Royal Robbins shirt with zipper pocket and huge velcro-closed pockets. Perfect for maps, and other items needed frequently. This way everything of value is with me - securely. PacSafe also makes secure backpacks. It's a lot easier to sleep with valuable camera equipment in an unmarked, locked & secure bag in an overhead bin on plane or train. Additionally, I make certain I'm never in harms way - in my hotel room by dark. Another handy tip - look confident.
